If you had an unlimited budget

Hello folks,

What if you had an unlimited budget? What would you collect? Would your areas of interest change drastically or you would stick to the same coinage as you do now? Please share your thoughts.

As for me, I'm a huge fan of San Marino coinage (as you already know). First of all I would get all the golden and silver issues I'm missing in my San Marino collection. Then I would move on to a top class collection of German and Italian states. Finally, I would have a fantastic collection of ancient Rome and Greece silver and golden coins.

Regards,
O.D.

I would do all of the coins (modern), from Ukraine, Belarus and Poland. Their commemoratives are supreme. I have a few, but lots missing.
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.
For all you banknote collectors. Link to my swap list.

If you ask me, my top 5 modern commemorative countries are San Marino, Austria, Ukraine, Latvia, Belarus.

Druzhynets,
As you are a strong collector of San Marino coins, why is The Vatican, not included in your top 5?

Well, that's because they are a different country. Also I'm not a religious person so Vatican is quite boring to me (apart from those pre-1945, they may be nice). Anyway, Vatican has never been my priority. I would rather prefer to collect commemoratives from Italy, since they have a lot in common with San Marino.

First I would upgrade all the lower grade coins from my collection, then I would continue with the 10 main countries that I collect.

But I would also start to collect German States coins and Indian states coins. I love the designs and I've always wanted to collect them, but because there are so many of them and I knew I'd only ever be able to get a small fraction of them, I never started to collect them. But with an unlimited budget, I would grab every one I could get my hands on.
Top class French and French colonial issues and essai pieces for me; maybe the US classic commemoratives and some Weimar era German commemoratives too.
I'd probably work on getting a complete US type set, including the early gold types that cost up to $250000 each. I'd probably also start collecting foreign rare and ancient gold, in high grades.
Well, it looks like we all have a good taste but not enough resources.

My tastes would remain the same, Great Britain 1707 - 1967, although I would extend the scope a little to include the gold coins, specimen issues and Maundy money.

The real change would be in how my collection is stored and displayed. I have a dream of a climate controlled museum like room with the walls lined with high quality wooden cabinets for each series, rows and rows of bookshelves and finally a few nice gun racks.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

My collection dream would be Italian states.
With an unlimited budget, I'd have an unlimited appetite for coins. :)

Not to long ago, I saw a college campus for sale, with a truly unlimited budget, I would purchase that campus and start a non profit numistic association to study coins and amass a huge collection. The filthy rich could donate their collections for tax breaks and be able to see it whenever they wanted. Retired coin collectors could live on campus and study the coins or travel around the globe amassing more and with any luck, I would have one of the biggest coin collections ever and not have to buy most of them. So if you want your collection to stay together long after you have left this world, just help me get this started by sending me your collection. lol
I'd expand my scope to include the Newfoundland $2 coins, and maybe a 1946 5 cent piece.
The problem with an unlimited budget is it removes some of the joy of collecting. If you could get any coins you wanted whenever you wanted then it removes some of the joy of the chase, or the excitement of saving up to get a really nice coin.

I can't describe the pleasure I felt when I finally found a really nice Melbourne Centenary florin and had saved up enough money to buy it. You might recognise the coin, it won the Australasia/Pacific category of the MPCC this year

It wouldn't have been nearly as exciting if I had unlimited resources and could buy it outright...although in saying that, If I had unlimited resources I'm sure I'd have fun travelling to coin fairs and auctions all over the world to get the coins I wanted.
Agreed, entirely.

Though an enlarged budget wouldn't go unappreciated. X-D
My target is all issues of Arab countries.
So with an unlimited budget, that would include all the gold, silver, patterns, essais, and all the super rare pieces.
And as a result, open a museum to show and study them.
One can dream I guess 0:)

If I had an unlimited budget, I would go for Liechtenstein gold coins, Ionian Islands, Abkhazia silver and gold coins, I would complete a South African Pre-Union set, Khorezm People's Soviet Republic coins, complete Kingdom of Hawaii coin set, Nauru coins, Anguilla and basically coins from nations that minted so little or are just expensive to get.
Why change anything? More coins do not necessarily mean more joy.
ūūūūū
I would still collect coins,(real coins) that have circulated and not the BS tokens some countries produce--- not much would change
If I had unlimited funds my interests wouldn't change, I would still like the same coins. What would change is I'd be able to get them :O which if you ask me is more than a fair trade for the thrill of the chase.
I'd go for crowns, half-crowns and sovereigns of each UK monarch (first and foremost a few gothic crowns and Una and the lion ) —hell, with unlimited budget I'd probably just extend to a complete pre-20th UK set—, every early US commemorative, a complete Walking liberty series, a complete Hawaii series, a complete Canada/canadian provinces set, Victoria $1/2 and $1 Hong Kong coins...

A fantastic coin! Would love to possess it myself.
Well, 4 members of Numista claim to have one, though it doesn't mean that all of them do.

I would seriously collected medieval coinage.

I think I would mstly focus on my Sweden colection. Get me a Plate coin, and some gold coins. I would also focus on 1500-1700 coins.
I would also upgrade all my lower grade coins and focus on silver.
I've always been interested in ancient coins, so that's absolutely something that would escalate. All from Ancient Rome to Arabian kingdoms and the East Asian civilization.
Oh, how I wish I had an unlimited budget! :O
Some collectors just appreciate the challenge of finding that “perfect” coin. With an unlimited budget, nearly any coin can be purchased. It is finding that coin at a steal that is the real challenge for collectors. In addition to the challenge of finding just the right coin, many collectors are modern-day treasure hunters. Just imagine walking the beach with your metal detector in hand, and stumbling upon a horde of coins worth thousands or even more. It is an extremely long shot, but still worth dreaming about.

If I had unlimited funding, I would combine all my collecting hobbies into a museum or nonprofit foundation for historical preservation and education. I would advocate for collecting in general, be it coins, banknotes, stamps, records, books, etc.

My museum would have ever thing organized by age. So, for example, you could see all the objects and specimens from the 1930s all in one place.

I would have a warehouse for duplicates, assembled into large "starter kits" for collecting clubs, smaller museums, and other organizations.

And of course, I would donate funding to keep online collector communities, like this one, thriving and growing.
I would collect the same coins (Central and South America by years and varieties), but only in BU. It's very hard to find some years even in VF or F, and to find all the varieties is even harder.
I love to collect the old coins of Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, France Kingdom and Belgian coins.
Are they only kingdoms and silver and so I have an unlimited budget.
I'd buy as many of these as possible: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172716450407?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Its by far my favourite Scottish coin

PS. anyone willing to donate £13,775 to the 'buy me a ridiculously expensive coin fund'?
cmaclean,
sorry, cannot help with the coin as just bought a property in Spain.

Wow that is a gorgeous coin.
If I had an unlimited budget, I still would have the same main problem: no unlimited time. With an unlimited budget that main problem would only be bigger and bigger.

But of course sometimes you start dreaming. Some weeks ago I was at a coin auction in the Netherlands and I witnessed the selling of a coin for 160.000 €. For American standards that might not be that much, but for European standards that's a lot of money. It was the most expensive coin ever sold on an auction in the Netherlands. It was on the news on television and at the front page of a newspaper the next day.
The coin was a golden Portugalöser from Deventer from 1640:

Unlimited budget, I would rather have unlimited time to work on my collection. Yes Rene you are so right.
It is, what it is, or is it.
With unlimited budget I would try to collect the worldwide coin collection and donate it to the National Museum.
Quote: "ALLRED1950" Unlimited budget, I would rather have unlimited time to work on my collection. Yes Rene you are so right.

Well, with an unlimited budget I assume I don't need to work, so that's that much time I can use to sort my coins and private-fly to every coin fair around the world.
Yeah, I think I'm a much better numismatist when I'm broke.

With unlimited coins I couldn't appreciate them all the way I'd want to. That's why my answer only expanded my scope by ten coins. Right now when I open my little box of coins it's like Christmas and birthday all at once.

I have also thought of that.
Anyone wants to donate??? :`
The Louis Philippe coin is 35$ for two.
It's a worth coin. But not very much regaarding the price.
Anyways cmaclean, your idea is great and I like that Scottish coin too.

Oh yesss, Liechtenstein is out of list!!!!
Nothing would change. I would just be able to complete my collections quicker and with better grades.

I collect any German coins after 1872 and am very incomplete before 1933, almost complete after. I am also trying to collect as many different world type coins as possible.
I'm a man of simple tastes. With an unlimited budget, all circulating and commemoratives up until around 1950 (that depends on their looks). I'd start with Poland, Scotland and German States (Prussia first) :)
