Hi,
just needed to share it with somebody. Today I was going to Walmart to get some flowers and potting soil. When I was leaving the parking lot and heading to the stop light, I stopped on red. A minute later the green arrow signal came on and I proceeded to make a left turn when from no where a car was coming on a red light, I couldn't stop and the car hit the front of my car and proceeded to top by the curve. My mom got out of the car and exchanged some words in English, which she isn't quite fluent in. I started calling 911, when suddenly the car that hit us started fleeing. I just had to hang on 911 to take a picture but the car was long gone before I could pull up the camera app. Then I called them back and explained everything and in 10 minutes a policeman was talking to me. I tried to tell him everything that I could remember. Now I blame myself for not thinking of taking a picture of the persons plate number before calling. I don't have anything to go on except for the part of the plate number that My mom and I could remember and the persons description. Hopefully some camera of a nearby bank have captured it on camera and would help us catch the crook. Now my week is ruined and the car need some repairing. On the bright side, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and it could have been worse (thank god it wasn't).
All I'm asking for is a few words of comfort, and maybe a hug or two
We need a hugging emoticon, but this will do for now:
You see a lot of hits and runs in YouTube. In Russia, a lot of people have dash cams because driving there is crazy and if some moron hits you or comes out of his car to threaten you, you want to have proof to show to the police. People even jump in front of cars to get injured and then sue. This is done a lot in Third World countries as well.
Of course, one always think that "This is not going to happen to me" but your story is a reminder to us all that anything can happen. The most important thing is that neither you nor your mother were injured.

Fun fact: when the Chelyabinsk meteorite fell a few years ago, because so many people had dash cams in Chelyabinsk, there were a lot of dash cam videos of the meteorite in flight.
IIRC that one meteorite had more known videos of it than any other in history.

Yes, good point about the Chelyabinsk meteorite which, as you say, is the best recorded meteorite in history.
And I found out that IIRC = "if I remember correctly" ─ long live Google!
Hello Hello There
Glad you both are well, That all that really matters. Bad things happen to good people. You take care of yourself and family for that is the only thing that is real . May you find peace and walk in peace.

I feel your pain brother. I have four broken vertebrae and a broken knuckle courtesy of a hit and run. Well, more of an attempted hit and run - his radiator was hooked firmly on my towing hitch so he only managed to drag events down the road and into a busy intersection.
Since then we've had a dashcam.
Anyone driving in Florida should have uninsured motorists coverage. It sounds crazy, paying extra on top of some of the highest rates in the world to cover the deadbeats but I'm very glad that I listened to my insurance agent. Florida drivers are in my experience the worst in the world and if that's not scary enough, about 40% of these maniacs don't have insurance. That's one of the reasons for all the hit and runs, often leaving the victim to die by the side of the road instead of calling an ambulance.
The legal system incentivizes this kind of barbarism. Doing the right thing can leave you with a string of felonies and thousands in costs. Fleeing the scene of an accident is a misdemeanor with a $200 fine. It's a real shitty thing to do to another person who was just driving along minding his own business. I can recall a time when such a person would have been shunned but today we have normalized the anti-social.
I reckon it's hard to look on the bright side, but cars can be replaced and repaired, loved ones can't.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Cross your fingers.
In the past 6 months my son got my car into an accident twice. The first time (in December) it was not his fault. I left my car at the body shop December 19 and though the estimated completion was about 3 weeks even considering all the holidays it still took much longer than that. My wife picked it up February 8 while I was away. We had a rental all that time, it was mostly covered by my insurance but the last week was covered by the body shop as it was technically their fault for taking that long. When I came back I noticed a little problem with the rear window defroster - it wasn't working - and took it back. They "fixed" it in 2 days (I had another rental covered completely by the body shop this time). But the following day while my son was driving the rear window just shattered into pieces when he hit a little bump on the road. Took it back again. As the job wasn't done properly the day before they replaced it with a new one at their expense and again covered the rental. Now, 6 weeks ago he's got it into an accident again and this time it actually was his fault. The estimate was about 2 weeks for repairs. Well, I have finally picked the car up yesterday! 6 weeks with an original "promise" of 2 weeks. Insurance covered the first 26 days of rental and the body shop again picked up the rest of it (11 days). It is not some small private body shop either but rather a very "reputable" one with 260+ locations across Canada. This particular location is owned by the dealership that I'm leasing my car through (that was the reason why I wanted them to do all the repairs). Anyways, it is a long story but I really hope it is over and also hope that my son will be driving much more cautiously now.
As for your case, I'm glad that you and your Mom are fine. And the car is just a pile of metal and plastic that can be repaired. As long as the body shop sticks to their original estimate both money-wise and time-wise. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your son and the car. Hope there were no injuries.
A family friend works at the body shop that we took the car to. I don't think there will be issues.
I am sure there are plenty of witnesses and cameras dotted about to catch them.
My life is permanently wrecked thanks to a bad driver, seat belt saved my life after being hit at a total of 90mph, but it didn't stop my vertebrae and neck from being permanently damaged. The key thing is to remember you are still alive and lucky it could of been worse.

Somebody recommended us to hire a lawyer, and now we are seeing why. As it turns out, Geico never sent the payment to the body shop, even though we told them the name, address, and phone number of the body shop. Also, for some mysterious reason, they decided that the repairs on our car are over and that we picked up our car from the body shop, again, without them ever sending a check, and now we are getting 2 to 3 calls from Enterprise car rental a day. They say that Geico stopped paying them since the 5th, although we received the phone call on the 12th, why didn't they call earlier, and now they want us to pay out of our pocket for the rental. We recalled to the Geico adjuster, who we suspect is the reason for all this headache, and he promised us that he sent the check to the body shop yesterday and that we can go get our car the same day. We called the body shop to make sure and they say that they didn't promise such thing and that we will get our car when the money arrives. Today we received two phone calls from Enterprise so far, saying that starting tomorrow we will have to pay out of our pockets for the rental, again.
We are still in this never ending circle of phone calls from our lawyer to Geoco to Enterprise and back to us. Will it ever end...
