Are Krause valuations for real?

Take the Malta 10c 1986 coin (KM #76). Four million were minted, not very low, it has a Numista rarity index of about 26, which is pretty common yes? And yes we find lots of these coins in bulk lots, and yet Krause (Collecting World Coins 13th edition) lists it as being worth $1.25 in VF condition! A more realistic valuation in my experience would be around $0.10

So I start to wonder what planet the valuation experts at Krause are living on?

Really $1.25, score! That is steep...I'd go for .05p.

Krause is what insurers go by and dealers use it as their "Bible".
Given that Krause is tailored for an American market, I will say I think those coins are rarer in American hands than European.  I've personally not encountered but maybe two or three in all my bulk lot searching.
There are coins wich worth 0.10$?

Dealers use it as a selling prop. ("I'll sell you this coin for $275. It's worth $300, see?" as they shove a book in your face.)
Try getting them to pay you 40% of listed value, and see how quick they run from their "bible"
The true price lies somewhere in the middle  between regional and Krause values

And I thought I was cynical!  :)

I think of myself as a realist, but a cynical realist works too 8)
If you have seen some of the coins I bought from dealers in the last little while, you would understand. I'll post some pictures of the coins in 2x2's with prices on them. Coins that an optimist would be affraid to grade any better than VG, marked as VF and price as EF. ( I bought them for around the price he paid, because he couldn't find a buyer and got tired of trying.)
And I consider the dealer in question a "fair dealer".

Fortunately or not, here in the UK I only know of a few dealers. One operates by appointment only from an address a mile from me (small world) and deals in valuable, rare old coins. Out of my league so I can not comment on the realism of his prices.

Another is a retail outlet in Southampton town center, where the few they have (mainly silver, a few commemorative crowns) seem reasonable retail prices - remembering that one pays more retail in a shop than at an auction or wholesale.

Grades of course mean nothing. I saw an ad on eBay earlier for a coin which in the title claimed it was "BUNC" and later in the description said it was "circulated but almost mint condition". Er, which is it? Uncirculated with original lustre, or circulated with very little wear? In the photograph I could see edge knocks. Not that I was buying, just perusing the market with a view to trying to raise some much needed beer money... er I mean grocery money.
