Crossed the 10,000 different coins threshold today! While kind a arbitrary, still a number I was counting down for. :8D
Congratulations!!!!

How much does that weigh?
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble.  It's what you know for sure, that just ain't so.  Mark Twain
Congratulations! I still have another 1650 to go. Maybe next year for me ;)

yeah im curious to know how much it weighs too. I'm going to guess ....165lbs?
Wow! Congratulations from me also!

How much room do they take up? Can we get a group picture?
51.1 kg so about 113 lbs
I will take a picture this evening and post it. Most are in 14 inch double row boxes in 2x2s.
I hit it a little earlier than I had planned. I think 93 of them are actually tokens, but I have probably another 1000 or so tokens to catalog/enter. (one of the many projects I have waiting)

Interesting. I tried to project out based on my own collection lol. I'm at a little over 8300, but the coins still way around 62kgs.
That is quite an accomplishment! Good job!

brilliant - well done I have about 270 to go for 60kg so should get there next year, but trying to do it with genuine circulating coins only collecting most countries by KM number only
Congratulations on achieving a great target. It is a milestone I reached a few years ago, but had a big smile on my face the day I added that 10,000th coin to my Numista database, and the smile is still with me as I added the next 1,000 and so on.
I still think 10,000 was my biggest smile. Just checked the weight on my coins:-162.7Kgs. This is Numista weight as I cannot be bothered to weigh them myself

Wow, that's hell a lot of coins! How do you store them? How do you sort them?

l store the coins in many different ways.
All loose coins, that are without capsules are kept in albums with them being separated by country. I start at No.1-Jersey, then went around the world until I got to No.78-New Zealand. This happened many years ago, as I am now up to No.307.
The smaller coins are in 6 albums and the larger coins are in 7 albums.
All coins that came in special capsules are located in country section, laid out on special shelving, with them kept together by type or area, i.e., all Eastern European coins are kept on one shelf, then other area of types are similarly laid out.
Special sets are kept in their original boxes.
The collection takes up the whole of my loft which I have converted into my den.

Nice accomplishment, but why is your set hidden?
Steve,
I do not see any advantage of it being visible to everyone. I do not look at others collectors coins, as I am only interested in their swap items.

Ok. Photographs of part of my collection below.

On this photo, there are Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Poland. This is the first shelf of 6, so you are not seeing it all.

Wow. That was far more expansive than I expected. And they're displayed like that all the time? Must be nice!

What I wouldn't do for a day to explore!
Yes, they are all on permanent display, just as you see them, although, there are 4 shelves which are not on the photographs.
I will add more tomorrow

This is about 90% of my coin collection. It does not include most of my US coins as they are in Whitman Classic Folders, but does include all my tokens so the total should still be right at 10,000. I don't have near as many commemorative coins as COINMAN1, so with the exception of the US coins all are stored in these boxes. I think I currently have 36 of the 14' two row boxes in use. Still love that display of all those Commens. Great collection COINMAN1. Really neat to see other collections and please add the additional pictures.
Worth,
like the look of your collection too, but how do you know what is in each folder?

Apart from these, I have three albums of First Day Covers and two albums for special Euro coins.

Fantastic collection! Well done! So how many years did it take to accumulate all this staff?

Not any more. I loaned it to Harrison Ford for one of his movies, but he said they lost it in some cave, but what the heck.

Countries are alphabetically cataloged. I then organize by KM number or sometimes just logical denominational progression (smallest to largest) depending on how Krause has the country organized. Just whatever makes sense for each individual country basically. About half the boxes are in this multi-country form. When a country reaches about 120-125 coins it gets its own "row" (half a box) and is kept separate from the general boxes. Several countries have their own box and these single row/box countries are then organized alphabetically. (with tokens Germany has 8) In theory my collection will grow to the point all countries have at least a row and the first group will go away, but in practice this will never happen and I will always have the two tiered cataloging.
I have always focused more on general circulation coins by year (a lot of junk box material), so I have a large number of coins that I want to catalog as cheaply and efficiently as possible. Using album pages with flips would many times cost more to catalog an individual coin than I had invested in the coin itself. I have found 2x2 envelops (plenty of space on the front to catalog) and easy access to the coin, plus the ability to then store in the two row boxes as the cheapest and most efficient method of storage.
I love your office set up with the coins lining your route. That really is an impressive display of coins. Thank you for the pictures. And I too am curious, how long has it taken to collect all those coins?
Started, with my first coin when I was 11, but it really only got serious ten years later, so, altogether about 55 years, but 45 in reality.
How about you?
Thank you also for you comments, which are really appreciated.
Seems to make it all worthwhile

Wow, super rude.

These are all really impressive collections. Do you guys often catch a glimpse of a coin you haven't seen for awhile? Like seeing it for the first time again? Or are there any in particular you come back to often?
No, not really. I do go round the most of my collection at least once a week, so am constantly seeing all of the coins that are in the photographs.
The ones I do not see that often are those in the albums and the First Day Cover albums.
I even get these out regularly just to have a look through.
The reasoning behind this is to try and remember most of them when I visit coin fairs or shops, especially when they are not listed in Krause, as I usually take two catalogues with me. I put a circle around the KM# to indicate I have the coin, but as Krause is miles behind, I need a bit of a memory. Usually do quite well, but do make a few mistakes. These would then be added to my swap list.

I also started around 10-11 as well. However, at first I was primarily a currency collector. Coins were only an afterthought that people would give me when they traveled, but I never bought them, just currency. This was true throughout my teens and kind of dropped off in college (yes beer and women were more interesting than coins and currency ;-). It was in Law School (early 20's) (I'm an attorney, barrister for those across the pond) when I picked my collection back up and still focused mainly on currency however I was a poor student and common coins are much cheaper so I began to organize all the coins I already had. I also would pick up 10-15 coins (.25-.50 each) each week and would organize them along with my currency. Once I got out of school I was totally broke and while I still focused mainly on currency but, couldn't really afford enough new material to satisfy my needs. I then discovered the "junk box" at my local coin shop. For those first few years one of my Friday after work rituals was to go through the box and pick out coins I needed. 4 for a dollar and 25 for 5 dollars. I would get anything from 25 to 100, usually settling on 50. With a good 12 pack of beer I would go home and catalog them all over the weekend. Now some of my best memories of my collection. I used my Krause catalog and would check off in pencil each coin by year, literally using it as a check list. Before we got deep into the 2000's just one catalog was needed. I could take it to shows and shops and sit and check off what I was buying. I used this method up until about 6 months ago when I began entering my collection in Numista. I now use my phone and access my collection, but plan to export it Excel and print it off though, as the phone is just too cumbersome to be practical.
Series of coins tend to really bring back memories and passion to collect. At first I did a poor job at labeling where I received a certain coin. I know there are coins in my collection my grandmother and father brought me (both deceased now) or I collected while on a trip with them. I wish I would have marked them (I try to label when someone gives me coins now), but I do remember what types they brought me, so I tend to really enjoy collecting from these series. Thus circulation coins that would have been in circulation in the late 70's-early 90's from all over Europe, Israel, Hong Kong, Macau, Egypt, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia etc. are my favorites and bring back the fond memories of why I began collecting in the first place. I have similar habits with my currency as well.
So with beginning back around 1980-81 I am over 35 years amassing my collection and while through the years my attention to the hobby, or focus area will change I always come back, with the new area (tokens, transit tokens, traveler's checks, Notgeld, stamps) added to the total of the collection. I will have areas I collect heavily for 2-3 years and then not add too for several years, but can always return to and enjoy.
What a great story! No doubt those Friday afternoons with a coin trough and a beer are some fond memories.
COINMAN1 - do you get these silver commemoratives with good deals from coin dealers?

I have noticed that many European and American coins sell at a silver price but the small and exotic nation coins are mostly heavily overprised (excl. gold coins).
Absolutely awesome display of coins all of you.
Years of hardwork & perseverance.
I store my coins in trays.
Are flips better.

'better' depends on many things. no the same for everyone.
I have moved much of my collection out of flips and 2x2s to trays.

Nice idea with the boxes & velvet lining
Mr.Midnight - I have also prefered 2x2's before but now I have bought a few used Leuchtturm/Lighthouse albums for euros and presidential dollars and planning to have coin boxes for silver commemoratives. Used boxes are cheap in auctions, sometimes no one wants them for even €1 or €2/box. I have looked one that have slots at least for 36 coins so I don't have to have so many of different type of boxes in the shelf.

Earlier I didn't want to invest in coin supplies too much but now I want that the collection looks impressive. I usually prefer used ones if available.
Wow, 10k is a massive achievement. I have been at around 3000 and have massively cut it back due to storage. I am currently only keeping my best coins and have got down to 633.

To be honest i am really stuck at the moment with what i want to do, i have no real focus or aim and have just been aimlessly collecting anything and everything for the last few years. I need to find a continent/era/country etc to focus on.

Trp, That is a great question, of which the answer varies considerably.
I can visit my local coin shop, where we say there are 20 crown sized silver coins. The price range is huge, and for no reason I can understand.
Mintages about the same. Silver content the same, so no reason for large variation in prices. Obviously, those of pure silver will be higher.
Where there is a low mintage, then prices rise.
I do get a little discount, as I am a regular customer, but he is a genuine guy, and if a sensible offer is made, he will take it.
I see that eBay also has a great range of prices, even for the same coin, so I think 'unexplainable ' is the true answer to your question. Do you find similar to above?

That is amazing, all those coins.

I am at a measly 3728 coins weighing 23.2kg, but now at least 2,000 of them are in proper albums.

It must have taken you ages to arrange everything for those photos - wow!
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

It took me quite some time to reorganize it as originally they were placed anywhere there was a space, and there were plenty of spaces.
Later realizing I could not find certain coins I was looking for, the brain said this is crazy and something needs doing badly.
So, stripped out every coin that was on the shelves at that time, then started to organise them into countries, then had to make a plan how I was then going to group them together.
The results of which you can see, but there was less then.

Glad you like the photos

Likewise, I have only begun cataloguing my coins and banknotes in the last 3 months due to Covid restrictions. Having a hobby has been very helpful during these stressful times.
Started with a bang and got a lot done in the 1st few weeks. I write a lot of detail in my Excel worksheet about the coins and notes. Nothing costly in my collection, routine stuff. I am more inclined to pursue the banknote collection. Preferably older notes.
Joining Numista and reading the different forum posts has been very educational.
Happy collecting and cataloguing!
