What are the prices like to buy Newfoundland coins in Canada?

I'm quite interested in them and they seem to have reasonably low catalogue values, but the only ones I've seen for sale over here are like double the catalogue value. I was just interested to see if they normally sell for well over catalogue value, or if they are just more expensive over here because there aren't as many of them.
Yes, they sell over Catalogue Value. There are not many around of them in UNC condition.
Most are in VF or F or VG. All canadian before 1900 are very expensive. That is what I think.
Here are a couple sites to check out. Colonial acres is a good one to bookmark and keep checking if you are looking for something in particular.

I'm not so interested in the silver but I love the large cents like this one that sold here recently which actually sold for a decent price

I would say $3 - $5 is about right for that large cent. Those are normal prices even at the TOREX
A topic after my own heart. My dream is to have a full set of Newfoundland coins. (Minus the $2 set and the 1946 5 cent piece)

I'd also put that coin in the $3-5 (Canadian) range. the photos aren't great but it looks to be in nice shape.

The 1917 one cent piece is by far the one I see the most often of any Newfoundland coin. They seem to just pop up everywhere. With that in mind I might wait for a lower price, but $5 CAD for it is about book from what I can see.
That was NZ$5.00 which I think at the moment is about US$3.50 or CA$4.50 which is spot on catalogue value

I've always felt the Newfoundland Cents were premium priced as compared to Canadian Cents, both large and small. My Charlton catalogue seems to confirm this feeling.

Select Large Cents (common varieties, Cdn $) in EF grade:
NF CD
1904 75 15
1907 45 12
1909 30 10
1913 12 8
1917 12 7
1919 18 7

Even at VF grade there is a premium but, not quite so pronounced.

Of course, Newfoundland produced a large Cent up until 1936. Seems the premium holds true.

And judging from my 1985 Charlton catalogue, this has always been the case.

Did you happen to notice what the differences tend to be in mintage?

I guess I could not be lazy and have a look myself. 0:)

I'll get back to you all on that.
If you are looking for any I will be going to a show next week and I can keep an eye out. Send me a PM and let me know.
I just bought a lot of 102 coins and tokens, many from Newfoundland. It's likely I'll have quite a few duplicates to offer for swap. (I have yet to enter all my coins in the catalogue ─ no duplicate entered yet.)

Will you be posting here when you've finished? When neilithic has picked through I might like to have a look.
Hi Mona,

It looks like there are about 50 Newfoundland coins in the lot. I'll have duplicates for sure and will have more time in coming weeks to organize everything.

I was unlucky several weeks ago when I won 1885 and 1888 large cents (among other items) at an eBay auction but the package never came. The dealer reimbursed me, but I still have a faint hope I will receive the surprise package in the near future.

I was in your province for a week earlier this month, in Saint John's, but didn't have a chance to go to the two coin stores I was told about by people familiar with the city. A friend got a nice 1873 50 cents at one of them. But I went to an antique dealer and we had quite a good conversation about Newfoundland coins and tokens.

Brilliant, if you have any pre-1945 coins then I'd be keen

The last coins were minted for Newfoundland in 1947 so I think you may be in luck!

Camerinvs how long ago was that package due to arrive? Canada Post isn't the swiftest.

Over six weeks ago. In eBay there is an expected delivery period for each item which is almost always correct whether Canada Post or any other courier delivers the envelope or package. It so happens that the one other major exception (beside the one that never came) is an envelope that should have come while I was in Newfoundland. It came three days after my return, i.e. about a week late, but their was a "Redirection Crew" stamp on it. It had obviously been sent to the wrong place and then redirected.

I noticed that something strange is going on with Canada-US mails. Seems that way too many letters get delayed or missing and I don't know who to blame - Canada Post or USPS. Fresh examples - my letter from Montreal to New Jersey (distance of 8 hours of lazy driving) took more than 6 weeks to arrive to the addressee and another letter from Detroit to Montreal (6 hours drive) still didn't arrive 8 weeks after being sent.
Is there any enhanced mail security procedures in place now? Or it's just a sloppiness?

It would not surprise me if it was in Canada Post's hands somewhere. I think I've talked about it before here but I sent a card, nothing else, nothing to give them reason to inspect it, and when I finally inquired about it a month later a CP employee told me that she doesn't even start to wonder about it until at least the 5-6 week mark. She doesn't worry about it until after 6 weeks or so.

I've also had them tell me that a tracked item was delayed due to severe weather or natural disaster in a city that I know to be experiencing nothing but blue skies.
I've been having alot of problems with the post lately....
- Expected a registered parcel from Poland sent 5 weeks ago from an ebay purchase. Not received till now though the dealer gave me a refund a few days ago
- Not received letter from the US which according to ebay I should have received yesterday. Its been over 3 weeks now
- 2 letters from the Royal mint after they confirmed shipping. Stanley cup Hockey and another with just the free booklet for the 150th Anniversary set never arrived and RCM just gave me a credit refund without me asking
- Registered letter from Russia, about 3 weeks now

Arrggh! So frustrating
In my case, the two letters I mentioned above were being delivered from Ontario to ... Ontario. So, there would have been no delay for security measures.

Currently I have a couple of eBay purchases that are taking quite a while to come, but I think it's due to the sellers taking a while before actually shipping them.

I hope my Newfoundland coins won't take much longer to arrive!

In the case of those cards it's possible that the mint just ran out? They were only until supplies last and they tend to just sell until they can't find any more in the warehouse.

The rest is classic Canada Post.
The RCM sent me a confirmation that they shipped out the coins, so unless they made a mistake in the address or something and then just refunded me the money; its all been very weird just the same ;)
Oh they refunded the money for the coins? I thought you meant they refunded you for the 150th booklets.

That is strange.
I'm extremely relieved that the lot finally came in today ─ much later than the estimated delivery date.

There's an 1885 Newfoundland 10¢ in there, low grade (G+) but I'll take it: mintage 8000.

Congratulations! I hope we get to see pictures!
I will post pictures within a few days.

NFLD: There are also 1865, 1882, 1917 and 1919 10¢. Quite a few 5¢ 1890-1944. A few 20¢/25¢, all of which I already have (unless I find some new variety). Surprisingly, there are only two small cents and no large cents! Sorry, Neil!

Canada: four silver $ 1957-1967; eleven 50¢ Edward VII─Liz II; 23 Victoria-George V silver 5¢; seven 10¢, three of which Victorian. Also, 27 colonial tokens, most of which I already have unless there are new varieties (I think there's a Bank of Montreal 1844 ½d "thin trees" which I didn't have).

There's no doubt that the 1885 10¢ is the most remarkable find in all of this.

Sounds like a great lot
It is just unbelievable.

Here are pictures (in the holders, so not great) of the Newfoundland coins I'll keep:

The Victorian 10¢ are by far the most valuable in the lot.

I'll post some of the rest in the "Additions to your collection" thread.
