Packing gone wrong [solved]

Hello every one
A few weeks ago a numista member put up some coins for sale , I checked his feedback he had top rating . So we worked out a price that was ok for booth of us plus shipping and agreed!!
I got the coins in the condition you see in the photo , they were taped on to a piece of cardboard, and when asked i was told it doesent leave any sticky residue on the coin . WRONG , every one of them has to be cleaned !!! If he would of told me he needed a few more bucks to put them in pvc coin sleeves i would of been ok with that !!
Do i have to tell a profesional coin collector in either a swaP or sale dont use tape on the COINS ???
Isent it common sence ??
I was very disapointed , but life goes on ,
Happened to me once but it was a swap not sale, funny thing was out of the 3 coins that were in the package 2 of them were packed correctly while the 3rd was taped directly to the cardboard. Since it was a low value swap I didn't make a fuss about it but if it was a large swap like yours I wouldn't be pleased :(
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
I still do not understand why people are doing this. I use small plastic bags for "not top/not worthy" coins, I pack them up so tightly so they wont move at all.

It's quite commonly done. I understand novices doing this but even very experienced collectors/ ebay sellers can be guilty and they ought to know better.

I reckon the easiest solution would be to copy and paste instructions into a message for every swap on exactly how you would like the coins to be shipped, but I don't feel entirely right doing something like that. If it was done to me I'd find it condescending and even vaguely insulting.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Jarek, you are my man. I do it the same way. :O
I've had this happen maybe twice. I don't get too worked up about it but it is annoying. Even if it doesn't leave sticky residue, it can lift dirt or patina off a coin leaving patchy areas behind. I would rather have a dirty coin than an unnaturally patchy one!

I wrap each coin in a square of waxed paper before taping it to the cardboard. Sometimes that feels like overkill considering many of my coins were found rattling around with other coins in a bulk lot or junk bin, but I would prefer to err on the side of caution. Regardless of how they were treated before I acquired them, I don't want to be the one to introduce new damage on the way to a swap partner. My duplicate pocket change might be the last date that another collector needs to finish a series. Even a coin worth only a few cents to me can be treasure to another collector who has been searching for it; I try to respect it as such.
Now the other side of the story.

The person who sold them was me. I offered a whole lot of African coins for sale about 750 grams of good quality coins from Edward VII up to about the 1980s (the original listing said 1940s but there were a couple of East African coins from Edward VII)

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic56448.html

I had several requests but this member got in first and requested all of them. Since he was first I gave him first selection and sold them to him at a small fraction of what I could have got for them by selling them on trademe over here, because colonial african coins are extremely popular.

Now usually I wrap up each coin individually in a piece of paper, but since there were so many coins and I'd sold them for such a good price that sitting wrapping each individual coin was not going to be worth my while so I used some non marking document tape that I use at work for preparing damaged historic documents for scanning at work. I have used it in the past without any issues. I asked another member if he had any trouble with coins I had sent him using the same tape. He said that a couple had a sligh residue on them but it came off pretty easily with a bit of acetone.

NOW FOR THE BIT HE DIDN'T TELL YOU

After the coins arrived he sent me a rather nasty e-mail complaining about it and asking for his money back without even checking the coins. I replied to him that I had used a non marking tape that I had used in the past and AGREED TO GIVE HIM A COMPLETE REFUND IF HE WAS STILL NOT HAPPY. He sent me another e-mail apologising and saying that the coins were OK

Now I get up this morning to find he's bad mouthing me to the rest of Numista.

Well the offer is still there. I will refund your money if you send the coins back to me, in fact I would really enjoy that because I could sell them here for a hell of a lot more than I sold them to you for. This could have been solved if you'd just PM'd me, well you want to drag it into the forums so my response is, send them back for a refund or stop complaining.
Whooops, somebody was to fast with public words here... I guess this should be marked as solved. Too much drama.

I hate to see how people love to talk about their problems with anyone else but not with the one that could solve the problem. A poor communication it's the best way to end in a bad deal. x.

I wouldn't say to fast. He messaged to say that it was okay on the 9th, posted this on the forum on the 14th. It was on purpose.

Re: Echange ·1·
Νeil hi
I just received the coins you sent me and am very disapointed !! the coins are fantastic , but the way you packed them is terrible  !!!
How can you even think of putting scotch tape on them and taping them to a piece of cardboard . Any coin collector would know that the tape sticks to the surface of the coin and destroies it !! When i bought them you had the responsibility to pack them in a correct and safe maner and have them shiped .
I would like to send you the coins back and have my money sent back  !!
I am sorry with this outcome . I dont think i am wrong with my opinion but i am open to yours . thank you . yiorgos.

Neil hi . whats so nasty about my complaint about the way you packed the coins?? any six year old knows not to use tape on a coin !!
If you did not get the money you wanted why did you send them , you offered me a price and i accepted !!
Neil , i never bad mouth you on numista , i never used your name in any way !! you semm to be agressive about this matter !!
Yes i was mad and wanted my money back but shipping booth ways would cost me more than the coins you sold me !!
No one twisted your arm to give them to me for the price you asked, if you changed your mind and wanted to get more money thats your prioblem .
Of course send mee my money back and shipping cost and i will be glad to return them and then you can sell them and make a hell of a lot money .
If you are a profesional coin collector act like one and respect the coins you send . now thats a nasty responce !!
take care and thank you yiorgos

I received also coins wrapped in adhesive band but I didn't felt I could be helped in any way if my disappointment would be public. I tried to fix the problem with my swap partner. My comment was about how people think we are judges and can fix things up instead of a little bit of communication. You will realize that this will end in more drama and your problem is still there and on top of this many other people who will get involved without knowing all details of your deal.

Yes, because I try to be nice to Numista members. I have in the past sold lots of coins on Numista for a fraction of what I could get for them on auction sites and I have also given away large amounts of coins for free.

But what gets me annoyed is that you told me in a PM that the coins were fine, but then you complain that they are not on the forums. If you were really unhappy then you could have just told me that you were still unhappy and sent them back rather than dragging it into the forums. You may not have mentioned my name, but I'm on the forums all the time. You must have known that I would see your post and know it was aimed at me.

Well send them back then. My return address should be on the envelopes, if you can't read my writing them PM me and I'll send it to you. When they arrive I'll refund you the money and any postage as long as it's a reasonable amount, about the same that I paid.

What a drama here
ROMA AETERNA
So..... Party A gets coins and thinks they are wrapped in scotch tape which would quite rightly be a problem, Party B says no, it's a non adhesive document tape and quite safe. I've never heard of document tape but then I don't handle old documents in my daily job. But I know Neil well enough for many years and I trust both his judgement and integrity. I've dealt with him several times and the only complaint I've got is that I can't make the man accept a better price and I feel guilty.

Are the coins in any way irrevocably damaged? If so you have a more than generous offer to return them for a refund of both the purchase price and your shipping costs. If they are not, why the complaints?

The original post is very misleading as it omits any mention of a refund being offered and the fact that the tape isn't common sellotape type stuff.

Hi.....
I sent you the coins in coin rolls :)
Hope you like them

And people present here who have read julius caesar drama.....X-D
We are just like the Roman mob
Yiorgos Uncle is Antony (8
And Neilithic is Brutus:P

Lets see who wins our hearts by their speeches

But according to me we shouldn't fight between each other....
Coins are simple pieces of metal which don't mean that they can break a relationship between people.
We should be friendly..... So according to The Supreme Court.....

Judge(sayan) : Members of the jury.... what u have decided?
Jury : Neil should be punished, prison him, charge fines..... take his all coins X-D
So the Judge gives his verdict......

After hearing all the arguments the court has taken a decision......
Neil Neilithic have been found criminal and should apologise to victim Yiorgos.

The court will also charge 0.00000000000000001 USD to neilithic and also 0.0000000000001 seconds jail.

The court dismissed.

Soooo here is my 2 Cents

I was the other member that bought coins from Neil and yes there was a bit of residue from the tape on some of the coins but
1 He gave me a hell of a deal and
2 The residue came off with just dabbing the tape on it or even acetone took it off.
3 There was no damage to the coins

I think this was gone about the wrong way and when I told Neil about the little bit of residue he offered me a refund as well but I didn't feel it was necessary. The public forum isn't the place to air private issues.

Matt

PS
Neil when you get the coins back I'd be happy to buy them from you as well

Neils offer was quite generous. His reputation precedes him. No need to take the issue public. I'm not sure of the purpose of the original post as it accomplishes little and omits things which make Neil look bad. We may not have known it was him but he would. If I were him I'd be pretty annoyed. He's actually been more tactful than idve been. Either take the offer or enjoy the coins and leave the post off the board.
