Arabic coin identification help

8 posts
Hi all,

I'm coming to you for help identifying a coin I picked up today. All I know about it is that it's about 19mm across and written in (some variant of) Arabic script. The star symbol is a mystery to me, as is the unit of value. It has a value of 20, but beyond that, the best I can make out the text is as follows:

شهراماثی (transliterated: sh-hrama-th-y)

۲۰ (20)
پر? (p?r..?)
كوپری و وری س...؟ (kupry w wry s...)
(The first word at the bottom could very possibly say "copper" (kupr, as far as I can tell, which translates favourably assuming it's all one word!).)

Do we have (m)any Arabic/Urdu/Farsi/Kurdish speakers here?? I don't think it's Arabic, due to the presence of the letter 'p' (the first letter of the monetary unit, after the 20, possibly also containing an 'r' and an 'm'), so it's likely to be one of the other three.

The only other thing I can add is to note that on the side shown in the first picture there is a faint pattern of rushes or reeds or something.

Any ideas very welcome. Thanks!
This is what I've got.

It looks mysteriously similar to Central Asian coins, but it isn't. It also is not Turkish.

Check this out. On the reverse just under the circle I see a faint three. This could perhaps be the date?

Hi,
It's a Turkish token:

This token was so common, people used it as a currency: Value 20 Para.

Thank you both very much, and for such quick replies! It amazes me that people are able to identify these tokens when there must be thousands of such things to choose from!

I'd still love to know what the lettering says...
Thanks to alastor for posting the original details and for the replies - I also have one of these and have spent hours scratching my head over it, but only just found it by Googling for images of 19mm star circle arabic and lo and behold it brought me directly back to numista for the answer !

I love numista for the power of the search engine - is there any better ? (Well maybe Google is our friend too of course!)

Ow !  There was me thinking one of these might by now be uncommon but bam777 comes along and says he has "a number" !  z)
I also now see that this token has been discussed in another thread on Numista:

- so I'm going to keep mine for the next time I cross the Galata bridge - I don't want to get chased by any bridgeman and thrown off  :8D
