$10 Million for the first $1 coin.....

Thought to be the very first dollar struck that would have been held and checked by George Washington himself. Insane how the 'value' has crept up in the last 80 years.

Some people have so much money that they throw $10,000,000+ at a coin worth $12 scrap value. B.

(I will concede that it is a beautiful example , even if lady liberty is not the prettiest looking bust :O)

I remember when this happened, most of the authors of various magazine articles I subscribed to expressed doubt that this was one of the first made, but if that is what it takes to make the sale...

I also remember that the bidder also outbid themselves to get the $10 million price tag, looking it up now the bid was at $5.5 million and the bidder outbid herself to $8.525, more than a $3 million increase, which, after the buyer's premium was added brought the coin just over $10 million.

I remember when this coin went up for auction, Bruce Morelan ran a contest on the PCGS US Coin forum, which involved guessing the final value. I guessed it would sell for less than it had previously sold for, I was way off. But in my defense, Bruce was the purchaser, and he wanted to see it go over $10M. IMO he's now hyping it in order to sell it at an even higher price. Here he is:
