just a thought. I was thinking of a button a user can click if he/she thinks that the image can be improved. Every user can see a personal list where there is a request for a better image of a coin that he/she has in his/her collection. Or, perhaps, the referee is notified for the request first and the ref can justify the request, after which it will be put on the personal lists.
Of course, one could also replace the 'bad' image with a better one by oneself, but I think in many occasions he/she does not have the means or does not have a high quality coin.
Sounds like a good idea! It could be like a dropdown list or a comment box, where a recommendation for improvement is sent to the referee of the country!

What about a drop down box on a coin page where collectors with that coin may post pictures of there coins of any they think are better and or want to show other collectors variants of that coin. This is especially helpful for older coins when not every coin was stamped the same.
As a referee, I must say however that I never got requests from members for adding variants. When I have them, they come from internet, are my coins, or I have to request members actively.
Risk is then to have a new fancy unused feature.

I guess I was not clear enough. What I mean is that as a referee, you don't need someone who says, "hey, this is wrong". You need someone who fills the request as much as possible, and does the changes. If one has the pics, then change it !
Referees are smart enough to see which pics need replacement but not enough time to look for them.
Is that clearer ? Not that the info is not interesting, it is just not very useful.
Need an example ? What if I tell you many many Bohemian coins lack inscriptions, lack translations, lack basic descriptions . You know that. We need someone who opens the sheets, looks at the pics, and writes down the texts, fills a change request, that then needs to be validated. Like the coin cropping initiative of yours which is for me by far one of the best things done on the catalogue for long !!
Sounds better ?
