Correct, but what about the "SEDAN 2 SEPT 1870" on the head?
With the inscription of your head are all clear. It's a collar of shame after porazheniya Napoleon at the battle of Sedan. But known only to the inscriptions on the coins are scratched or nadakarni. In this instance the inscription on the neck of a single main minted stamp. ???
If you ask me, I'd say that the counterstamp on this coin is way too refined and has too many (and very clear) small details like serifs, etc. compared to original "Sedan" counterstamps. I think that it's a Photoshop image manipulation rather than real counterstamp on a real coin. Looks VERY fishy...
delfi-14, do you have this coin in your hands? Can you take more pictures with different lighting angle?
And I hope you are not trying to sell it here...

Interesting. I was wondering about the authenticity of
1 - the coin itself, and
2 - the countermark
The C/M seems too neat, and we know there has been an increase in fake C/Ms on the market. It is, so far as I know, quite unusual to have C/Ms on high grades coins like this. C/Ms are meant to circulate because they carry a message. This one looks almost like it was fabricated for the collectors' market...
I never thought of the possibility it's been photoshoped... It is so evenly punched onto the coin that this seems very possible ─ and it's as if it was designed to fit in exactly that spot where it is, without touching any of the design, especially the ribbon.
I'm not saying it's fake; I'm just saying that I am suspicious, and glykan confirmed my hesitations (and see how I ended my previous message).
I am - it's 100% Photoshop. Below is an image fragment slightly contrasted - it is clearly a computer font superimposed on the image. Plus, I took a liberty to compare the dimensions - if real, the thickness of the vertical line in letter "N" and the serifs should be in a range of 0.1-0.12 mm. I am just wondering, how many punches in metal one can make with such a delicate die before it breaks?

Those are good points. I opened the image in a new window, which allowed me to see much better:
I suppose the little "bubbles of light" on the D and elsewhere were added to give it a touch of authenticity?
To add to what you're saying, the top of the first S should look darker than the rest since it's in a thicker part of the design, but it's the same thin line as elsewhere.
Completely agree . I am a bit lazy otherwise I would go to the list of TTF fonts to find out which exactly font has been used. On the other hand, it's not worth the trouble...

He may come back under a different name... and a different font. We will have to keep our eyes open for some Russian member who posts photoshoped countermarks and relies on Russian ► English Google translation ...
Quote: "PetrusAscanus"For me it looks like it is engraved with computer guided engraving machine.
Perhaps even with a laser....
When was it that laser was invented....?
I personaly think the coin is fake too, not only the countermark.

delfi-14 - OK, you have convinced me, it is a laser engraving Though it doesn't make it less forgery than the Photoshop "creation".
Such a pity - good coin destroyed for nothing...
Для тех кто в танке - хорошо, это не фотожаба, это лазерная гравировка. Еще хуже - безнадежно испортили, болваны, хорошую монету...

I'm not sure that 1966 was the laser engraving, the album with this coin my grandfather gave me for my birthday in 10 years. Your right to believe or not.
Good for you, you've got a good heirloom - but still - sorry - it doesn't look like an authentic countermark. In 19th century, the technology was simply not there to make such a precise and delicate work.

Hello, i do not have enough knowledge about this type of countermark to be of great help, however, i am pretty good at recognizing fake coins. To clear things up, could you possibly show us a hi-def picture of the reverse, and of the countermark area? On behalf of the community, i'll say sorry to you for any mean comments in any past posts, however, we do see a lot of trolls on here, and many of them happen to be russian!

In my opinion the coin is real, just cleaned, and the counterstamp was recently added. The counterstamped French coins of the era just had the word "SEDAN" added to them. Here are examples:
