It could be trial strikes, or essai cancelled? or something similar?

Either way it is something to keep...I've never seen a coin given that treatment.

in Google images and have a look at the patterns. You would need to know what the French did to cancel coins at that time. If there is an official lattice pattern they used, then you would need to compare your coin with certified cancellations.
