There is a dealer in Dublin that is gold-plating Irish coins and charging €25 per coin.
They advertise in national newspapers (broadsheets) for respectability.
Its a complete rip-off, although they are operating just within the law.
They also sell bullion coins, so the gold-plated coins look like a good investment (to non-coin collectors) and they are making a fortune.
There is also a few guys selling fake 1985 20p coins - some advertise as replicas, whereas others claim they know nothing about coins and dupe the public who bid for them.
I've written a few posts about these but who are you going to believe ???
Yes, of course, the dealer with a prestigious address + an advert in the Irish Times.
Enamelled coins were very popular during late Victorian times and they are commonly found today. Of course it ruins them as numismatic items but some of them are really well done with a beautiful cobalt, red and white colour scheme.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
I've seen some fantastic shillings with the Royal CoA enamelled and have considered buying them before but they do sell for a good amount when done well. Usually more than I'm willing to pay for a display piece !
Here's an "enameled" quarter I got back from a vending machine. Nice try, but whoever made it managed to get the ink at 90 degrees to the design on the coin!
