1830 5 Francs without the I Tiolier

4 posts
Hi everyone,

I am a bit confused with a coin that I have come across. It is a 1830 5 Franc from Paris (A). I read that some were minted without the I after Louis Philippe, mine is an example of that. It also has Tiolier engraved in small writing. I have also heard something about the edge being raised or flat.

I don't know how these things affect the value of the coin! I have attached photos, mine seems in a worn condition, without the I, with Tiolier and a flat edge.

Can anyone help me value the coin? Thanks in advance!

This is a French website, but this is probably one of the most significative one for French coinage valuation:

As you can see, there are effectively 2 different edge varieties for your coin: raised aka. in relief (tranche en relief) or flat aka. engraved (tranche en creux).
For grading, this website uses French grading system, making your coin in VG in USA (I guess) equivalent to B in France. And you can choose your valuation currency between euros and dollars.

Thanks a lot! I am still a bit confused about the relief and engraved bit, but the website is very helpful.
Both with and without I have both edge varieties.
Here is an example of an engraved edge variety (made without the I, but the edges are identical): https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6003.html
