had a chance to purchase this coin, it was 40 dollars, and unidentified. would it have been worth it? especially in the grade shown? thanks for input!

This coin has short circulation life due to its legal position to officially circulate. Therefore it is not surprising to find good condition of this coin. Such coin can be purchased in China market for CNY 35 (USD 5.5). Maybe UNC one will have a bit higher price but I don't think as much as the price you shown.

And as a reminder, this coin has high forgery (fake) so beware. In addition, the coin is made of brass so it should be looked yellowish in normal situation.
