Isle of Man 1995 £5 coin

7 posts
Hi. I've bought a first day cover that includes a £5 pound Isle of Man coin identical to: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces54567.html

The catalogue coin is only listed as a Virenium Proof. The coin in the first day cover is a gilt colour but that could be the plastic capsule has gained a yellow colouration over the years. Does anybody know whether a standard uncirculated version of the coin was issued and if so what material it was. Any help identifying whether the first day cover contains the Virenium proof or another version would be appreciated. Thanks

No personal experience with the coin, but the gold gilded versions are usually in their standard metal. I've found them occasionally in my silver proof coins.

You can test to see if it's silver, but unfortunately it's probably just Virenium.
Thanks oggy. I didn't buy it specifically as a virenium coin (or any other metal). I actually assumed it could be CuNi with a discoloured plastic bubble - which I've sometimes found. Both the Queen's bust and Churchill are frosted but I'm not convinced it is a proof. Therefore wondering whether it is a standard (non-proof) version of the coin or whether it is the proof version and I'm therefore unsure whether it needs to be added to the catalogue which only contains the proof version at present?
I've not physically seen any Virenium coins, but most of the pictures I've seen for virenium coins have a slight yellow/brass tinge to them.

I'm not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I'm good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It's the only way I'll learn.

I believe there are varieties of Virenium that have Manganese in addition to the Copper, Nickel and Zinc, which might account for the yellowing

All the virenium issues are yellow. POBJOY MINT calls this metal a man made precious metal. Every virenium coin in my collection is yellow. Some lighter some darker...maybe toning, but yellow.
