Sweden 5 Ore 1981 KM#849 vs KM#849a

Hello !

Does anyone know how to distinguish between the two coins? The only thing I threw in the eye is that the coin KM # 849 (at least the ones I have) are 'umlauts' in the word öre with holes in the middle and a much thicker character designer between words öre and sverige. While coins KM # 849a are mere dots as umlauts and much thinner character designer. If any of you have a coin I would ask you to check.

See the coin sheet:

Change of metal

I know that. There is also a different weight, but the difference in weight is so small that it is impossible to distinguish between them. Changed metal is only a difference in the admixture to copper (bronze about 90 percent copper, and brass 60-80). In this case, unless brass has a lot of copper, because the two coins look identical. Hence my question if anyone knows any differences that distinguish them.

Wow, this is something I think most Swedes don't even know nor care about. In "Myntboken", one of the most authorative books on Swedish coins, they don't make a difference between the two, citing 54,960,593 as total mintage of the 1981 one.
Well, these riddles are quite a few. Alone among Polish coins found some new varieties. Therefore, I write my own catalogs of circulation coins which contains the knowledge that I was able to gather. I add pictures details that differ in these coins. Unfortunately, after comparing all the coins that I have, I came out like this:

to 1978 coins have a 'thick' character designer and holes in 'umlautach'

in 1979 fat designer mark and delicate hole just left 'umlaut'

in 1980, one with a thick mark the second with a thin, both with 'umlaut' without holes

only that I have the 1981 has a thin mark and 'umlauts' no holes

coins from years 1982 and 1984 (1983 I do not have) like 1981

So the theory collapsed :(

1978 'ore'

1982 'ore'

1978 'mark'

1982 'mark'

Also struggling with a 1981 5 öre ... so let's revive this thread to see if any new knowledge has been gathered.

I have both 1979 and 1981 with the thin mark, neither of them seem to have 'umlauts'. So that indeed does not seem to be way to distinguish. I was wondering if they would also change the die in the middle of 1981 at the same time they change the alloy? So probably need help to distinguish brass from bronze.

And is the KM849a from 1981 supposed to be in copper like the comment on the sheet states? Is it an error or do we get three (!) alloys for one coin?

Help appreciated :-)

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!
The answer is ping test with your smart phone for example. If there is a difference in material, the natural frequency of a coin is different, for sure. This ping test works with silver and other materials. To be on safe side, you should have more than 1 coin of each types.
I have not checked how major difference there is regarding the metal content, but if you don't want to harm your coin using some liquid or sample tests, this is your test.

What app do you recommend for the ping test?
I have Advanced spectrum and bullion test apps on my phone. Bullion is some how easier to use.
