Opinions on authenticity of 1923 Denmark 5 ore

8 posts
Hello, I need some advice from the more experienced coin collectors here. The other day I found a coin in a "bargain bin" that, if authentic, has a significantly higher catalog value than any coin I've owned. However, an online search shows that there are fakes available on sites like AliExpress, so I am cautiously skeptical about this.

I think this coin could qualify for VF, which has a catalog value of $400. The diameter and thickness are exactly correct according to my digital caliper. I don't currently have a coin scale, but my food scale reads 8 grams (it doesn't have tenth-of-a-gram precision), which at least accords with the specifications on the page. I don't see any casting seam along the edge, and the coin looks old to me. The bargain bin I found it in frequently has older coins (I have found a few 18th century ones) from people who have sold their collections to the shop.

Thoughts on the likelihood of this being authentic? If so, what would my next steps be, assuming I want to sell it? I assume I should submit to a TPG - is NGC the best choice for world coins? If they do authenticate it, are there better places to sell higher-value coins like this than eBay?

Thanks for your advice!
Did you find it in a coinshop?
If yes, it is a fake.
Is it magnetic?

If it is real, do not be dissapointed if you get not the price you want for it.
The values you find on internet and catalogs, is the value on paper.
The real value is Always a lot lower

Yes, I found it in a coin shop, in a "junk bin". That's why I am doubtful of its authenticity. However, this shop deals almost entirely in US coins and in silver and gold bullion. As far as world coins go, they buy people's collections, pick out big silver coins (but plenty of smaller ones slip through - I bought a Greek 20 drachma and two Japanese 100 yen on the same visit), and sell the rest in bins. So I think it is possible that a coin like this could end up in the bin, if it was sold as part of a collection being liquidated by someone's widow, etc.

It is not magnetic.

I understand catalog values and sale prices can be very different, but even a fraction of the catalog price would be worth pursuing, if the coin is real.
Lets hope it is real! Then you did a good deal.
I do not see any differences with a real one...

Looks good to me.

Do you folks think it is worth having it slabbed for the assurance of authenticity and boost in perceived value (absurd IMO but sadly real) or is this still a low enough value that I should just put it on eBay as is and see what happens? Thoughts on an appropriate starting bid?

It depends on the value between grades...like if its worth 10$ in F but 400$ in vf (those kinds of gradients exist) in that case yes but if the difference is like 20$ maybe just see what happens as is.
I'm by no means an expert in the field, but looking at images of fake 5 øre 1923 coins, this one definitely looks a lot better. If it is a fake, it is quite convincing.
