Suriname Dollar/Gulden

Dear members,

According to numista there are two different types of Suriname currency’s. But that is not true.

Until 2004 they payed with the Suriname Guilder in Suriname (SRG)
Since 2004 they use the Suriname Dollar, (SRD)

1000SRG=1SRD with banknotes
but with coins: 1SRG=1SRD.

So I think the Numista Currency groups of Suriname should become one, because we all collect coins and not banknotes, and the coins stay the same.

So: Suriname - Guilder (1826 - 2003) and Suriname - Dollar (2004 -) should become one. The solution is I think: Suriname Guilder/Dollar (1826 - )

True! The coins are still the same, 1-250 cent. Even though they've changed to dollar, the coin serie are still unchanged since they're still using cent as their subunit (and there are only cent coins, even though they're technically 1 and 2.5 dollar, they're called 100 and 250 cent respectively).
I disagree as the value of the coins has changed (the guilder coins became worth 1000 times more when they changed to the dollar).

I too, disagree. The currency SRG was replaced by SRD with a rate of 1000 to 1. The fact that new coins were not ready in time and it was decided continue to use the old coins with a new value just means that they were overnight representing another currency and worth 1000 times more.

Perhaps it is a bit difficult to administrate in Numista, but I don't think that a 'joint SRG/SRD currency' for coins only would be the solution to this.

Interesting point.

In my opinion, the coins up to 2003 should be listed in the SRG - Suriname Guilder section and all years, thus before and after 2004, should be listed at the SRD Suriname Dollar section, as this is in line with the validity of the coins.

Aside from this, I found an inconsistency for the 2021 coins (the composition changed from CuNi to nickel plated steel):

250 cent and 10 cent are listed at the SRD section, the 100 cent and 25 cent at the SRG section.

I think they should be all listed at the SRD section.

However we assign this, it won't be perfect since the coins were revalued in a highly unusual act. The only parallel I can draw are the Maundy coins. Although the designs did not change, we split these at the year of decimalization. It isn't ideal but at least doing the same here would be consistent.

While we're at it, can we fix the name of the currency to gulden? It's clearly shown on all the banknotes.

Former Numista referee for banknotes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Saint Helena.

Name changed, and while at it, I added early currency of Suriname (older coinage was using currency from Netherlands). While just a technicality, all issuers should use their own currencies and not currencies of other issuers.

And do not worry, they are marked as same in the database, once we get search by currency across issuers, they will be shown together.
