Hi all,
I may have jumped the gun a little when I purchased this coin as I didn't have my " inspection " tools with me at the time.
To the naked eye I put it somewhere in the EF bracket but now I am home and can inspect it properly I am thinking more VF, it has some contact marks and a slight weak strike on the reverse on the 3 lions that run down from 12 o'clock. Apart from this the condition is quite nice with some original luster in places.
Opinions welcome, good or bad X-D

Hey ninebobnote
I would think you are right. But very nice coin. But I love all pre 1970 UK coins. Is that a small die crack by the 19 by the bottom?
It is, what it is, or is it.
I don't know, I think it could make EF

Hi Allred,
Its actually a tiny bit of dirt between the teeth of the border, I havnt tried to flick it out yet though.
Looks a lot worse in the pictures :(

I would even go up to AUNC with rim dings (so a good EF in my books) ... the ear on the portrait looks intact as do the crowns ... the only problem points I see are the rim damages and the 3 lions but that could also be a clogged die.
I have seen many of those American grading company coins that had coins with really ugly scratches or bag marks and they were still graded over MS60 so how the "official and objective" grading is done is still beyond me.
Idolenz American coin grading companies are all one eyed horse traders.
It is, what it is, or is it.
Thanks for the replies MG, ALLRED,ldolenz.
ALLRED has the right idea but as ldolenz says it " could " get quite a high grade if PCGS is anything to go by.
I have just checked their population for MS graded coins and I got a bit of a shock, one eyed horse traders everywhere.
On their scale I would have taken an EF 40+ but judging from the examples shown its more like an MS-62/3.
Laughable, I will stick with an English VF for now with a possible EF.

EF/GEF in my opinion, the obverse ear is very lightly touched but that is it, the ear is the first thing to go.

It is a great coin. I'd place it at an EF with a -. Those lions look like bubblegum.
XF without reservations! Really nice one.

I agree with bam777 that the lions on the top shield do look too worn for XF. That's a bit strange - an almost perfect coin with wear on one place only. Perhaps it came out of the mint like that.

Anyway: if someone would have traded it to me as an XF, I wouldn't see any reason to argue about it.
I am no coin grader but it seems clear to me that it EF. Look at all the other shields, they are perfect, I think it came out of the mint like that.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins
