World coin custom value project

6 posts
Over the last few months I have had quite a few world coin job lots averaging 3-4kg each, going through these coins has been tiring to say the least.

I tend to pick a few out that are not high value at all just because I like the look of them, but the rest of the pile I would like to remove all the results from $15 VF and lower when searching the world coin guide at NGC, thus leaving me with an acceptable valuation with coins that are high grade.

VF is the grade price I am focussing on, any amounts higher or lower will still be listed if the VF value is higher than around $15.

if the coin isn't in the list then it isn't worth the time researching when value is the primary reason. NGC does not offer that custom results system, there is an exceedingly high amount of very low valuation coins mixed in with the results which makes the process tedious sometimes.

So I have taken it upon myself to create custom set World Coin catalogue price guide, I am keeping it in US $ because I have got used to it over the last few months plus it helps fellow collectors over the pond.

It is going to be a huge task and will probably take me a few months to complete, I started it a few days ago and have around 15 countries well on their way, here is an example of some of them as a work in progress.

I have begun with coin results that are around $15 for a VF, some of the Australian results are lower due to the fact the EF is a huge leap higher. all of them will be edited towards the end when I settle on a lowest amount for a VF.

It has helped me a lot already even though I only have a few countries listed.

Once it is in a beta stage I will grab a domain name and get it online incorporated in a website I will build to host only this, It is moving along pretty fast so shouldn't take me too long hopefully. It is of great use to me and hopefully others can benefit from it as well.

That's quite a project you've set yourself there. My cutoff is anything where the value of the flip is more than 10% of the coins valuation. I use the self adhesive lighthouse flips that cost me about 25c each so the lowest value coin I keep is $2.50. Anything less than that is really not worth sticking it in a flip.
Personally I wouldn't have such a high cut-off because there are plenty of beautiful silver coins that are worth around melt value in VF so are well under $15. Things like this one are only worth around $4.50 in VF https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces310.html
That's where you would use the NGC world coin guide ;)

The guide I am making is to weed out the higher value coins first if you are sifting through a large amount, then the coins you have left can be run through the normal NGC guide to secure the little gems as you posted.

This guide is for pure value reasons only, for example this coin I found in a job lot of world coins I received today. 1926R 2 Lire, it covered the cost of the entire lot 2 times over and there are many other gems I found which far exceeded what I paid.

One other thing I would have liked to do is to hook up these pages to each corresponding numista page to provide values for each coin listed and not just info, like linking the page above to the one below then merge them to show the relevant info to each specific coin/date listed in the numista result.

Before I checked NGC I had no clue of this coins value, it is these finds that has triggered my idea to have a higher price guide so I don't have to trawl through a huge list of coins to find the one I have, if for example searching through some pages that have massive lists, like the swiss rappen as shown below, these are the pages I don't want to look at when looking for a single coin for value purposes.

Ah I get it now, so you still look up the rest of the coins you like, you don't just pick out everything over $15 and discard the rest.
Exactly, I want to get the higher values out first just in case they get dinged around a bit or scratched, once they are out of the way then I know its little gem hunting time using NGC, which is the fun element for me and the most enjoyable part.

I have nearly 10kg of world coins dating from the mid 1800's from a lot of countries, if there is any coin you can think of you might like then give me a list and I will hunt through the coins for them or you can request a certain Country and I will dig out what I can. I love any excuse to go over a big lot of coins.
