Uganda is a country in eastern Africa between Congo, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia. With a population of 32 million, it is the second most populous landlocked country in the world after Ethiopia.
Uganda thanks his name to the Kingdom of Buganda that was located at the northern shore of Lake Victoria from the 16th century. In the late 1800's it became a British protectorate, similar to Kenya but always relatively autonomous. East African Shillings were used until 1966, four years after independence. The Ugandan Shilling replaced it at par.
In the 1970's Uganda was known for its fierce dictator Idi Amin. Amin became a symbol of violent and paranoid African leadership. He expelled (or killed) the Indian minority from Uganda which ravaged the economy, and hundreds of thousands of Ugandas were killed during his reign. It was speculated Amin suffered from brain syphilis causing delusions. At some point he even claimed to be the last king of Scotland.
During the Tanzanian-Ugandan war Amin was toppled by his Ugandan adversaries and went into exile in Saudi Arabia.
The Ugandan Shilling was not very stable, and in 1987 a new Shilling replaced the old one at 100 to 1. The new Shilling also suffered from chronic inflation and currently trades at around 3000 per USD.
The coins of 1966 are actually quite nice, and the design is a bit similar to the East African Shilling but with Ugandan symbols. In 1987 a new coinage was introduced but its value quickly eroded. Modern coins have pretty high denominations.
That's true, the 1st series look like East African coinage, but that's not a surprise... as they were part of this colony.
I've no coinage from this dictator (Idi Amin Dada if I remember his real name), only new shilling coinage, and that's funny to see how much its value was growing...
