1890 Penny Narrow date

Opinions needed

In the animated image below I have overlapped two 1890 dates from British pennies, you can see the 1 and 8 are perfectly aligned as it fades in and out, but then the yellow 9 pushes the date wider than the green one.

This would mean the green one is the rare narrow date wouldn't it?  8.

My Collectors coins catalogue incorrectly values the narrow date as £250, so that guide is of no use with this coin.

I think so.
Hi Fluke,

Could you post images with the toothed border for both coins?

Thanks!

The higher grade is the green one that looks smaller.

Sorry I haven't found another 1890 penny for comparison but I have a big lot of British coins to search through today and a 4kg British lot tomorrow, so I might find one to add later if its needed.

I have just looked at examples of both dates. I know they are known as wide and narrow dates, but as far as I can tell, the wide/normal date is not more than 1/2 a tooth wider than the narrow date. I would call them "Near 9" and "Far 9" or 'Tilted 9"

JMHO ;)

There is no reference to any tilted or wide 9 in this decade, only wide and narrow date varieties exist, the difference between the two is only about half a tooth, this is an image of the difference from the guide, all narrow dates are this size difference from what this guide book states.

Second opinions are good and help me to check and then double check Though  8.

Howdy

No, I realize that they are referred to as wide and narrow dates, but for this date I find  looking at
the angle of the 9 easier z|

...and look at 1874 and 1889 for more variation on date width.
The 1874 has varieties from 10 to 13 teeth, with 1/2 tooth stops along the way
The 1889 has 3  widths, with dates from 14 to 16-17 teeth wide.

I am having fun ;)

head scratcher isn't it... :O  B.

I have run out of google terms to use, tilted, spaced, uneven, error, space date.....gun, head, brains all over the wall  B.

I guess without knowing the exact size of the narrow date, we are not likely to nail it for certain. ;(
