Am I the only one?

I sometimes do something I find quite interesting regarding numismatics.

So, everytime I find something historically interesting I try to get coins from that period and place. For example, there's a literary work by nobel prize winner José Saramago which takes part in the 1700's in Portugal. So I bought a coin from that time and place.

I am also interested in the world wars so I got some coins (particularly from vichy french state)

The thing is I am getting interested in the historical times and places from the assassin's creed series (cruzader states circa 1100, renaissance italy, ottoman empire shortly after Constantinople's conquest, USA pre federal...). I can't possibly have coins from those times and places without spending a fortune  :snif:

So, any of you have this interest for some very particular times and places? Do you ever get coins from those places or are you like me and can't just have them like that? I'd love to know  8)

Nope, I do the same!!! Especially for WW2
I think a lot of people do the same thing. That is one of the great things about coin collecting. They are like "holding history in your hand(James Earl Jones quote)." I am interested in WWII, and so I am partial to getting coins from that period. I like U.S. silver nickels and steel pennies, and European occupation and liberation coins from France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Italian and Japanese coins from that period are interesting, too.  One of the most interesting coins from this period is the Belgian 1944 2 Franc coin. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces3103.html   It was minted by the U.S. on blank planchets for  American wheat pennies. Both coins are zinc coated steel coins.

I didn't know that coin... I SOOO want it right now, It's super interesting  :8D
I don't hunt out coins specifically for historic events...but what I do is to imagine the people that may have held a coin that I own.  Get a German coin from the 1930s, this coin could have been held by Hitler, or any of his top staff, British coin from the same period may have been held by Churchill, I used to have a widow's mite and I was imagining it may actually be the coin mentioned in the bible story

I do try but not getting into too many different.
I collect German States coins from the time of the 30 Years war (1618-1648). Unfortunately this large European war fought mainly on German soil has been forgotten over the years.
I started reading a lot about it and is has really cought my interest so that I decided to focuss my German coins collection to this era only. During those 30 years 1/3 of the entire German population died and in my State of Baden-Württemberg those numbers even almost reached 60%+ many historians even say that this complete loss of lives and imense debts are the result for the German States to have been one of the larger powers to not venture in creating colonies during that time.

From time to time I sell some coins on Ebay make sure to follow me @apuking on Ebay.
I like to collect colonial coins. I do have many historic ones like Prince Edward Islands, Strait Settlements, Danish West Indies, and many more from various dates. I also like collecting coins from the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand.
I am also a WWII Collector, commemorative and real currency. I only go for the highest grades and worth with axis coinage, I have a folder dedicated. Same reasons as Neil, imagining who may have held the coin, they could have been in the pockets of a German soldier on the battlefield. So many possibilities with WW2 era coins.

I have the same with the Netherlands Indies, Dutch republic, Russian empire and Portuguese kingdom. To aquire some coins you need not to hurry and in time you will achive your goals.

Cents are money too!

Try to find French or German early Notgelds for WWI. That's funny to see that even with these local coins, France still emitted circulating coins as usual, like French 50 centimes, 1 franc & 2 francs silver coins. Germany is quite more interesting, starting emitting normal coinage and finally emitting war coinage in WWI like did most WWII countries.

About WWII there are so much examples... In France, Vichy coinage as you said, an alternative coinage from Philadelphia (2 Francs 1944 only), some other coins are interesting too as minted in pre-war alloys (mainly 1939-1941), colonial coinage, including Free France in Africa. Germany made its low denominations war coinage too, we can find other puppet states like Slovakia, Croatia, Mandchoukouo, occupied territories like Belgium and the "Bohemian-Moravian Protectorate", or usual coinage like UK and USA (except the zinc wheat penny).

Did you try from the last episode during the French Revolution? Or the new incoming episode in the Industrial Revolution/Victorian Era in UK?
