UK KM#986a - just how common is the 1999 Bronze penny?

The catalogue says there were 916 million of these struck but I'm not so sure. I have been checking my change for literally years but still have not found one. Perhaps the mintage figure includes the magnetic one?

I think you might be right, Rick. It isn't easy to find. But you know where you can buy one for around £9!
yes i been looking for one too. It is like the US Dime 1982 P without a mint mark. I have been looking for 30 years and still have not found one. And iam a roll hunter. [Had 1980 but needs to be 1982]
It is, what it is, or is it.

I was not aware about this variation... actually is not even listed in numista

Iam sorry Justfor fun its 1982 no mint mark. Sorry Rick we are off topic

Hi Rick, the answer to your question is they are only available in bronze in proof sets and BU sets. So the catalogue is incorrect and should state proof and BU only.
Information from this link, although it does state proof only in the first paragraph and I know this is not correct as I have an uncirculated one.

Thanks Tony but I couldn't see a link attached? What you say seems to be backed up by the Royal Mint website since on their mintage figures page for circulation coinage they mention about the 1998 Bronze 2p but make no mention of the 1999 1p.

Thanks for that link. "Reverse die varieties" I didn't know about.
Only around 500 "extras" to go through.

Thanks Tony. Looks like that applies to the 1999 non-magnetic 2p also (KM#987a), so I can take them both off my missing list. And stop taking a magnet to all my "copper" change.
I do get a strange look when I do that. :.

I'm not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I'm good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It's the only way I'll learn.
So then a beg for moderators of Great Britain - please correct the 1 and 2 Pence coin types being discussed as only Proof and mark them as uncirculating then! I guess that everyone will vote for that ))

Thank you!!!

I'm afraid this page is incorrect, the Royal Mint stopped the "New Penny" reverse in 1982 so they definitely did not produce it in 1992-94 nor did it ever appear with the 3rd portrait obverse.

For anybody who is interested I have a 1999 bronze proof penny spare which I will add to my swap list. I might also have it in bunc but I will have to find it first before I can add it to my swap list.

Hi Tony, I'd be interested in the BUNC if you are able to track it down. Would you also be able to take photos/scans of it to add to the Numista page?

No problem Rick I will reserve it for you and add pictures to Numista catalogue, I will also have the 2 pence if you need that one also. I have a full set of pennies and 2 pennies all unc from 1971 to 2014 with the 1999 being bunc.
regards
Tony
