Token driving me nuts

5 posts
Hi all. Nice decor. New here. Been a coin collector on and off for almost fifty years, but have only gotten into some world coins the last few, as well as tokens. I hope to add more than I take. I've read twenty of the almost eighty pages of posts in Coin ID, so I hope I get this right. The token below says July 4, 1874, 98th anniversary of American Independence. Other side has a flag and long may it wave. !3 stars, for colonies to be sure. It is about 26mm, 6.8 grams, it looks like a metal wash over a coarse metal.
I installed Tineye, posted it to my webspace, and came up blank. It's one of about five mysteries i have, but is the one in front of me at this moment. Oh, I have checked online token catalogs, too. My only hope is that someone here has seen one... or maybe a washed token like this that would help me feel comfortable with saying it is from 1874. Who would think to counterfeit this and use 1874 for a date?
Thanks in advance. I have to get back to the remaining sixty pages now.
Cheers,
Chase

Hi,

Maybe it's a copy/repro rather than a counterfeit. Is there any stamps, on the coin or the rim, maybe a "C" or "Copy" mark?

Not found a great deal about it. Here's a link that describes the coin, but gives no picture or indication of size/weight, although it does say white metal, which could be why yours is plated.

Also found this: http://www.cwtoken.com/Civil_War_Token_Type_Set/Patriotics/Pages/F_-_Flags.html#13, which gives an image and die number for the reverse, but can't find any matching obverse.

Hopefully this may give you something else to go on.

I'm not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I'm good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It's the only way I'll learn.
Thank you! At least I know this is a known issue. As for a repro, I just don't think there's anyway someone would bother. Yet, I still am going to keep looking for one more, but at least my momentary woes have been alleviated.
Cheers,
Chase
Oh, PS - No stamps, no C, no anything other than what is stated

I have seen many weird tokens come around me in the short time I have been into them. If you have no other info on it, Might I suggest checking out Worlds Fair Tokens?

1876 Philadelphia, United states, Centennial Exposition worlds fair.

These things from what I understand, brought a lot of artisans, and the like, together from around the world. Several tokens have come from the Fair, I don't know about this year specifically, but I would think that maybe it could have been bought there. I know it is 2 years older than the date the fair happened, but crazier things have happened than someone making a coin like that pre dated the event. Either way, maybe the Worlds fair will lead you in a different direction.

Goodluck

Thank you, much. I didn't think about the exposition being there in 1776!
