Check out my latest little beauty. My scanner is a bit crap and the coin looks better in the hand, but it has beautiful dark toning and most of the detail, I'm thinking VF...agree? disagree?
Oh, as I said, it looks better in hand, the only signs of wear is a patch on the lion's shoulder and a flat bit on his hair just above the ear. Does that not qualify it as VF? if not, what does it need to be VF?
F+ I would give it because of the wear on the shoulder of the lion and the flat spots on hair, cheek and brow. There is also the fact the lion has no mouth, the rose has no centre and the crown is starting to fade, they are what I can see that would force me to attribute that grade. Still lovely though mate and something I'm missing in my collection !
I would tend to agree with Ben and Mark and give it F+/VF- but it is a beautiful coin and better looking than mine. Unless I'm mistaken, a proper VF grade can show even signs of wear due to circulation but should still retain all the original detail. Since yours is showing some minor loss of detail then it should be dropped a half grade or so.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say overall VF despite some of the VF markers not being met. It's a coin with really nice eye appeal which I think is sufficient to let it squeak through.
I wish people still used the a/g appendages from the heyday of collecting. It's a perfect candidate for an aVF grade.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

The VERY FINE (VF) coin will have about 75% of the original detail visible. Or, on a coin with no inner detail, there will be moderate wear over the entire coin. Corners of letters and numbers may be weak. A small grading area will have about 66% of the original detail.
