Dear friends,

I have one question. I have 1 UK penny from King George VI from 1948, before a day I read in this link (http://64.60.141.198/php/lot_auc.php?site=1&sale=41&lot=3541) that the value of this coin is more than 1000 EUR and that is a rare coin, so i would like to ask is this true or not. If you have more information please inform me.

I do not see why they say it is excessively rare - it is given the same KM number (KM#845) as the Numista link above. Unless it is because it is Proof (does a Proof coin get given a different KM number?).
I have seen a book where the ordinary 1948 penny is given a Freeman number 236, and then says 1949 is Freeman 238, then 1950 is 240 with 1950 Proof 241 etc. So Freeman do have different numbers for ordinary and Proof coins; so maybe the missing Freeman 237 in the book refers to a Proof 1948 penny.
The only really rare UK pennies I know are 1933 and 1952 and 1954 and the Edward VIII 1937 (not the George VI 1937). There were over 63 million 1948 UK pennies minted.
 I have a 1948 penny too - here is a photo of mine ...

maybe its only rare in certain parts of the world
"NGC graded Proof 63 Brown" Proofs do command a high price.
"Such is life" Ned Kelly
That's what I thought - so it must be that it is Proof that made it estimated $1000 to $1200
- not just the 1948 date; which is why my book did not list them as there must have been so few Proof made, and why your link says 'Rarity 18 - (6 to 15 coins known)'.
Sorry to disappoint on your first posting, but welcome to the site :)

Thank you to everybody for the help;)
I think its a scam. The only really rare UK penny is the 1933, and there is just one or maybe two of those unaccounted for. If you do find one, (there are lots of fakes about) it needs to be verified by expensive tests.

:) what about the edwardv111? there are 2 in a proof set at the royal mint.

Oh yes, the urban legend of the 1933 penny on the Big Ben pendulum. We know old pennies are used in Big Ben (actually the clock, Big Ben is the name of the bell, but heck who cares about being that pedantic <g>) but whether there was a 1933 penny in use and it was lifted by an engineer, well its a wonderful story which we all hear in the UK!

Suffice to say, at least one 1933 penny is STILL out there, somewhere.... One turned up on Antiques Roadshow some years ago. but whether it was genuine or fake was never established, from which we can assume it was a fake/forgery (people mill off part of the 8 in a 1938 penny).

It was never followed up, so we can assume it was fake - if it had been real there would have been a follow-up report on a later show.

Matt
:) if they ever find out if fake. do they put them in jail?
