Portuguese/Azores 20 Reis Overstruck Coin KM#306????

5 posts
I am not sure whether to record this coin under Portugal or Azores because has been overstruck.

I can make out a 20 and the date 1795.

Any suggestions

Roy

To avoid the coins to disapear from the islands, the coins had bigger values compared with a coins of the same size from Portugal.
In this case used coins "X Réis/1792" that, and since they had excess of "XRéis" coins  at the Mint of Lisbon, and re-minted them as "20 reis".
They did the same for III Réis to "5 Réis" and "V Réis" do "10 Réis"
Enclosed is a coin from my collection where you can cleary see the old coin of "X Réis/1792".

I forgot to say:
The coins are from Azores, minted in Lisbon.
There are coins made from virgin disks and also from old coins.
It is more common the use of old coins than virgin disks.

Thanks for the information. I agree with what you say because I also have a coin minted from a "virgin" disk. I see that Krause does not differentiate between the two types of mintages and gives them the same number.

The more used Portuguese catalogues also made no difference
