Coin collecting has been my hobby on and off for 50 years. I have not paid much for any of my coins and have collected them from various outlets, antique fairs, car boat sales, ebay etc. Numista has revitalised my hobby by allowing me to enter the coins on a database and giving me access to collectors throughout the world.

The expertise made available through the forums have made it possible for me to identify coins that I have had for years and never thought I would be able to recognise. (Particularly from India and China)

I agree Daryl, I liked looking at all the posts you put up as well Roy so I had a nosey through your online collection, truly an awesome collection you have there.  And you have a satisfying amount of New Zealand coins.

I am no expert Roy, and I probably never will be. I just usually state my opinion as a newbie, but sometimes that's the one you need.

After searching general term: boat shaped currency: I came to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sycee

Now if that's what it is supposed to be, I would say that is not a currency item.

Your item looks very old, for sure. However I don't see any identifying features on it, and just a quick search turned up only items that were made from silver gold or some other precious metal, which yours is not. If it is a currency, I have no clue where it would be from, but I would venture to say that without any identifying marks that I can see, you will have a difficult time with this one. I know, not much help at all. But I thought I'd weigh in. Goodluck.

As with others, Nice collection, and I hope you enjoy this site as much as I am!!!

Whoever told you this is Siamese is probably right, look up "slug money". These were usually made with a mix of bronze and silver. Unfortunately I don't know too much about pre-modern SE coinage, but that should be a start. :)

Hi,

I'm no expert. But i tried "Thai Boat Money" on the search engine and came up few results.
I guess its quite safe to say it is from Siam.

I got interested because it looked similar to Laos, Cambodian "Tiger Tongue Money" which I had came across online not so long ago.

We (in Malaysia) used to trade in ingots, mostly Tin Animal Ingots.

Here is one info i got online regarding it:
"From the 14th – 19th centuries, coins from the Lanna Kingdom in the northern Thailand embossed with various designs were also in circulation.

Around the same period, 15th – 19th centuries, Lanchang, the kingdom in northeastern Thailand introduced silver and copper money in long and narrow boat shapes."
