It is part of a series of tokens from Shell (Netherlands) in 1969 called "Ruimte Avontuur" (Space Adventure). There were 20 tokens in the full set.

But this one is made of aluminium and it is 12-sided.

Good point. On the Dutch site they state that there are 4 types of each token (See here)
a) Brass plated iron
b) Aluminium
c) Brass
d) 12 Sided Brass

The only examples of the 12 sided Aluminium tokens I could find were on a South African auction site (See here)

So still there are no enough evidances. Should it be mentioned like
SA (?)
or
Suspected from SA

I don't know. Leave it as it is. Actually the problem is that Numista team have too much work so nobody cares about tokens.

indeed we actually need a referree for the tokens from each country or one for an area.

Mission impossible. There is no enough referees for each country. So nobody would accept to be a referee for tokens.

Definitely. I add information last year. It is absent at the site till now.

There is some places that require clarification at modern Germany for example, but it logos like abrakadabra for months.

In this case obviously not much to expect for the token improvements. At least they are registered. It is very good for the first step.

"Where particular people congregate" - said my Pall Mall cigarettes, if I am not mistaken. This is a thread like that  - good people with good intension.

Anyways, I have nothing to do with South Africa, and although Shell is my valued customer I have no clue on the original question, as usual, you know.

However, this referee issue seems to bother people lately all over, and it bothers me as well, and it seems like we are 3 referees that take responsibility seriously: Hippaforalkus (btw, I always have to double-check your username to make sure I am not a dark peasant misspelling it always, where the heck did you get this usersname from? ) Kuna, and if you let me join the club I consider myself also responsive and responsible.

So.
More referees are needed for sure, and inactives and misusers of "authority" shall be sacked.

Imreh has 5 "countries":
- 2 proper countries: Hungary and the Ottoman Empire
- 2 collection of bishopries and nobles with minting rights: Austrian States and Hungarian States
- and one ancient thingy, Hunnic Empire: Attila and friends' coinage (with 4 coins, mostly mine, not much pain )

I can handle and improve them easily, indeed I am proud of Hungary with 1012 coins being the largest "proper" country on Numista, and I will work on Ottomans to reach the same stage.
BUT - as agreed with Xavier - I am not touching anything French (except Cabernet Sauvignon ) !
So, I would welcome a French speaking counterpart.
I also could take the token section for these 4 countries (I guess Attila did not issue tourist tokens) easily, IF it would be segmented that way.

Also, I have to state that we have 2 referees for Hungary, and my friend takes care of the closer end (e.g. recent and commemorative coinage) while I manage the "far end": medievals to about 1800s. - I have to say it works GREAT!

I think Shell in general will do.

I can speak for this token being South African.

They were part of a promotion at Shell service stations in South Africa in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Interestingly, I did not know about the issues in other metals in other countries.

Nevertheless, I have seen 100s of these tokens over the years. I even have a complete set mounted in the souvenir card with all descriptions in both English and Afrikaans.

I don't know if other countries also had the 12-sided aluminium versions, but mine are indistinguishable from the example given. Interestingly enough, the year and description of the piece is totally wrong. :-) The entire set was released contemporaneously and I would guess that would have happened in 1969 or 1970.

I am currently trying to get more information from Shell (In Den Haag, NL) on the "Man in Flight" collections.  Once I have more details I will put it all here.

One thing I did find already was the UK TV add for the campaign. The UK campaign had only 16 coins, unlike the South African and Dutch campaigns that had 20. The link is below:

reading the post it is strange that the shell tokens are in the France section, its more logic to put them in the Netherlands section.

I guess this token was uploaded by Philip ( Numista referee for South Africa) . Maybe it has a sense to ask right him if this token is really South African , or just anonymous, used in the number of countries?

An incomplete set, but I got it in Belgium. Don't know if it's belgian or french...

The coins are issued by shell that originates in the netherlands and the UK. I,ve the same set coins are identical but the blister is different. The coins from South Africa have a different shape and metal

BTW: I saw a complete set of the South African ones, in their cardboard holder, for sale at a market this morning.

Is anybody interested in it? I could get it and send it to you. I already have my own full set and holder.

I have the complete set which was collected in British petrol stations. I was given the set only a few years ago and some of the Tokens are now worse for wear.

These tokens have probably been used by Shell in a number of countries to attract returning customers. I know them from South Africa in both Aluminium and Brass. Hern's Handbook on South African Tokens lists them as a series of 20 pieces in these two metals commemorating "Man in Flight" issued shortly after the Moon landing.
