HELP
It might be that where ever you downloaded other stuff was not a safe site and added an extra program that now shows ads.
Go to Start -- >control panel---> Add or remove programs and look through the stuff that you have there. If any name sounds suspicious and shows recent date of downloading, don't delete it, because it may be totally very needed program to run ur computer, but it may be unwanted program or spyware.
Google about the suspicious-looking names in that list and see if any of them are not what they appear to be.
However, don't take first internet forum advice about any program, cos there is some smartass in every forum claiming every program to be some malicious software. Look for more than one reference before you delete stuff.
It's not necessarily a virus. If you've recently installed software, it maybe have come bundled with some optional adware included by default unless you unchecked a box during the installation to not have it installed. It's very easy to overlook stuff like that if you're not paying close attention and just clicking Next...Next...Next to get through the installation process.
You've a few options:
Uninstall any recently installed programs - hopefully, it will also uninstall any adware that came with it - check if you still get ads after that, then reinstall one at a time, re-checking after every install till you figure out if/when you start getting those ads.
You could install the AdBlock / Adblock Plus extension for Chrome (also available for Firefox)
Check what other plugins/ad-ons/extentions your browser already has and remove/disable any suspicious/unwanted ones. In Chrome, hit Alt-F and select More tools>Extentions
(this is kind of a drastic last-resort measure) You could try reverting your system to an earlier state. Right click on the Windows (C:) drive, select Properties, then go to the Previous Versions tab and select from a list of restore points.
And, of course, you should definitely have an anti-virus installed. Even the free Microsoft Security Essentials / Defender that come with Windows are better than having no protection at all.
