1853 plain edge crowns were only available in sets! I think they probably didn't sell lots of those 'coinsets' in 1853. Wonder how those cardboard packages look liked then!  :D

Yes that's true, the ornaments are just beautiful, just like every gothic Victorian coin. But I really wonder if  there were coinsets issued in 1853...

It was a spectacular 16-coin set in a red leather-covered wooden shield-shaped box with black padding ...

Described as "Victoria. Proof Set in its original heart-shaped case of issue. Gold Sovereign, Half Sovereign, Silver Crown, Halfcrown, Florin, Shilling, Sixpence, Groat, Maundy 4d, 3d, 2d, 1d, Copper Proof Penny, Halfpenny, Farthing and Half Farthing. 16 coins, the rarest of all the English Proof Sets. This is an original set with matching tones and colours throughout and with all the coins FDC. It is the finest set we have ever seen and made even rarer by being in its original case of issue, gold blocked on the outside simply as “PROOF COINS” and inside bearing a Royal Crown and the inscription in gold : R & S Garrard & Co., Goldsmiths and Jewellers to the Queen, His Royal Highness The Prince Consort, and all the Royal Family." I do not know how much it sold for, but well worth it.

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
Thank you zak. Now for all the forum members who have asked how to display a collection this is how it should be done. I strive to find the highest grade coins and do just that display the best coins in the best way possible (in time i plan to have a glass box made in which to display all side of coin.)
And again thank you zak

But where these sold? And were they even meant for normal citizens?

Normal citizens couldn't afford them.
The face value of the coins are 507 7/8 pence. Plus there was probably an extra cost.
They were most likely from the mint itself, sold to the aristocracy.

Holy crap. I've seen a lot of sets over the years but that puts them all to shame. I'd sell one of my wife's kidneys to get my hands on that.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

The book price is £75,000
A set sold for around £17,000 but I can't find the link anymore to show you all.
