What exactly is this alloy? Thanks in advance! Rob.
Billon is Unknown (Generally Less) % of Silver mixed with other metals.

Billion is silver with less than 50% of silver in :)
Mainly mixed with copper, so can be brown and not white as silver is.

 That's right - I have this holed coin - Ottoman Empire 5 Para 1878 - KM# 728



 Only when I looked it up on here I saw it was billon, so not the copper or bronze I thought it was.  :)

Yeah, the early Swiss rappens are Billon as are the USA war nickels, I managed to pick up a billon 5 rappen coin the other day, it was my first billon Swiss coin.
I think my only billion is the Irish bank tokens.
A lot of royal and feudal (medieval) French coins are in billon. :)
