Shivaji Maharaj was the founder of the Maratha Kingdom in 1674 AD.
It was an independent kingdom in India before the British rule and so it's not part of Indian princely states.

Thanks manxcat12 for adding it to catalog. Also 'India - Independent Kingdoms' is correct. There were many independent kingdoms during the Mughal empire era having their own coins.

A princely state was nominally sovereign. They were not directly governed by the British, but rather by an Indian ruler. But the Indian ruler would acknowledge British sovereignty in return for local autonomy.
Kutch was an independent kingdom founded in 13th Century but became a princely state in 1815 AD.
Even the states of Maratha kingdom like Indore, Gwalior, Baroda became princely states after the defeat of the Maratha's in the third Anglo-Maratha war in 1818 AD.
Indian rulers had many titles but the British government translated them all as "prince," in order to avoid the implication that the native rulers could be "kings" with status equal to that of the British monarch and hence the states were called 'Indian Princely States'

Unfortunately, "Independent Kingdoms" has been deleted, and my coin moved - so are the team denying the existence of this entity? This is an example of the effects of the divided forum; someone please go and tell the French to stop interfering a get back to sorting out the eternal mess of coins and tokens from their own country, or creating coin sheets depicting cartoon elephants.
