Hi

I think there is mistake in Canada 1 cent 2003. Both coins from this year are described in Numista as copper plated steel. 2003 without P should be copper plated zinc.

Thanks

Hi Levan, I'll check this and get back very soon.

Thanks

Ok, I found the error. Unfortunately, I cannot correct it for now, as modification fonctions are all disabled for some hours due to some problems.

Thanks

Done, but there's something wrong with that cent, I'm not quite sure that everything is correct, especially for those after 2000. Since I don't have the book I need to ccheck it out yet, it'll stay like this, but I will check it again very soon.

Ginger

I can write you data about Canadian coins after 2000 from A Charlton Standard Catalogue CANADIAN COINS (Vol. 1, Numismatic Issues 2011, 65th Edition - W. K. Cross):

1997 - 2003 Copper Plated Zinc (non-magnetic) cents:

2003 - 2006:
---------------
Designers and Engravers: Obv.: Susanna Blunt, Susan Taylor - uncrowned portrait
Rev.: G. E. Kruger-Gray
Other specification - the same as 1997 issue

Ginger, it is my pleasure. I will come back in this room, when I will have time to clean discrepancies in Canadian coin corner. There are some dupkluicities.

Regarding the copper plated zinc, isn't that strange that some cents prior to 2003 are marked with a P, but are made from zinc and not steel ? Isn't P supposed to be attributed to steel, and only to steel ? In the world coins (and on the page), there is a 1999 and a 2001 P, listed as being made of zinc. That's why I'm confused, and I'll buy the World Coins 2001-2010 for sure, there are other coins for which I have doubts.

Ginger

Hi Ginger

There should not be coin with P before 1999 signed as zinc. P is definitely (1 exception explained below) for coins made from steel and plated by copper.
Exception:
2006P non-magnetic (probably mintage mistake). They are very rare (RRR) and price is reflected this fact:
MS-64 = 600 dollars.

I think that also some canadian 1 cent with W (Winnipeg mint) are in database registered as circulating coins. Canadian cents with W were minted only as uncirculated (mostly zinc, but there is also steel in 2003 with sign WP). Can you correct that they were used for "sets only"?
Anyway, I would like to come back in this forum item with canadian coins. There are some doubles, which are not need to be posted. I will prepare more detailed message about that.

Levan from Montreal
Ginger, again me. It was not so complicated to find some discrepancies in Canadian 1 cent list after 1997.

1.) 1998W - should be assign as "in sets only"
2.) 1999P - copper plated zinc is wrong. Zinc should be changed with steel and should be assign as test coin
3.) 1999W - does not exist
4.) 2000P - very rare, only 8 coins known in mint state
5.) 2000W - as "in sets only"
6.) 2001P - copper plated zinc is wrong. Zinc should be changed with steel. Coin is "in sets only"
7.) 2003 - copper plated steel is wrong. Steel should be changed with zinc.
8.) 2008 - non-magnetic variation does not exist. For year 2008 is published only mintage of magnetic 1 cent coin

All these items were checked in three sources:
- Internet page: http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php
- Book: A Charlton Standard Catalogue CANADIAN COINS, Vol 1, Numismatic Issues 2011, 65th Edition, W. K. Cross
- Book: Catalogue des Monnaies du Canada, J. A. Haxby et R. C. Willey, 2010

Thanks. Next week end, I'll buy the 21st century World Coins, as I am not sure whether those from 2002 onward (when the mint started to split production between steel and zinc) are supposed to be listed under the same number, or not. I don't think so, since an suffix letter is supposed to be added when the alloy is modified. With your clues and that book (which I need anyway), I guess I'll finally understand.

Charlène

My sources are without registration number. Our canadian coin books are just about production of coins in single years. Keep in contact and let me know, when is something changed in 1 cents.

I made some modifications, but I think there will be further modifications as I get through the World Coins, my canadian coins book is not clear enough, I still need to find some clues which I think that will be right in the book, especially regarding the km# number system. I'm glad that you're helping me.

Ginger

Anytime come to me and ask me questions about canadian circulating currency.
Are you responsible for Canada in numista? It is one of my priorities. Who is working with Slovak coins and who with Indian?

i have a canada penny folder but im missing a few whats the deal with the 1936 dot penny is it real
you know anything about the new canadian tire dollars i cant find any info on them either
Yes, I'm responsible of Canadian and American coins, I'm from Quebec too, I live in Quebec city. I don't know (rather remember) who work(s) with Slovak and Indian coins, though. Yes, the 1936 dot penny is real, but you're not likely to find one of them, nor to see one. In fact, that cent was struck in 1937. George V died at the very beginning of 1936, and Edward VIII was to be the King. However, he bowed out as he married an American divorcee, which was unacceptable for the Royal Family. So he was replaced by George VI, and the time was way too short to prepare new dies. There was a high demand for the 1 cent coin, so they struck them with the 1936 dies, placing a dot under the date. It is generaly thought that they were thrown in the melting pot, with only a few known to survive. About 5 are known. However, there's an ordinary 1936 cent which is readily affordable.

ya i heard about the story of him and the american lady her jaguar  jewel just sold at an auction for a lot of mula
so whats the mintage on the canadian tire coins
Sorry but I don't know anything about the new Canadian Tire coins. A few minutes before, I didn't even know that there are Canadian Tire coins. I don't shop there very often, and I don't collect them so I cannot help you about that, but I found something about that. It's a limited edition, though. Canadian Tire

hi, so a 2006 non magnetic no mark is not worth anything?
Hi Kariko

-- hi, so a 2006 non magnetic no mark is not worth anything?

It is too young coin to show any value over coin value. It is mentioned in my list and I guess also in list in Numista and that is important in this database.

Levan,
The best way to check to see whether the coins with the 'P' plating mark is by using a magnet.

If the 1 Cent coins are attracted to the magnet, then they are copper-plated steel, not copper-plated zinc.

You can get confirmation on http://www.canadiancoppercoins.com from some of the members there.

As for the Canadian Tire 1 Dollar 'coins',there were 4 different types for 2010;

Sandy McTire was the first one (first released in December 2009).

I have got this one;

I haven't seen the other 2 types.

I wouldn't be too surprised if more Canadian Tire 1 Dollar 'coins' are coming out this year.

As to the status of Canadian Tire Money,it is classed as a community currency like the Toronto Dollar, the Pioneer Bonus Bucks, the Chemainus Dollar,& the Saltspring Island Dollar are, even though the Canadian Tire Money is Canada's second national currency.

Aidan.
