· Footnote
The Treaty of Amiens, signed on 25 March 1802 by Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844),
elder brother of Napoléon, and Marquis Cornwallis, temporarily ended hostilities
between France, Spain and the United Kingdom. However, the consequent peace only
lasted for just over a year as Britain, increasingly angered by Napoleon's subsequent
re-ordering of the international system in Western Europe, declared war on France in May 1803.
