2 Chiao Chinese Soviet Republic local coin (MOVED)

7 posts • viewed 101 times

While it looks like a 2 Chiao of the Chinese Soviet Republic the lettering/characters are not quite the same. The design on the globe also seems different. Weight and diameter seem correct.

I know there are contemporary counterfeits of these but they are silver washed copper coins, and from what I can tell the characters on those are the same as the original.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks

I found only one coin with this big star on reverse, on facebook, may be a modern copy.

Do you think it's silver? Most of the copies are ‘white metal’ maybe even magnetic. I have several authentic pieces, brass, and copper plated contemporary counterfeits. What you have is a modern fake and when there are design variations the metal is almost always wrong. My white metal fake is a less convincing one than yours (see link). Frankly, if you see one in that condition you should be highly suspicious. Look below at the preview panel and you will see a BU silver one that NGC said should be conserved before slabbing. It's very light (~-1 gm!) but I attribute it to a poorly processed silver planchet that appears “crystalized,” that's why it's light. You'll find quite a few Chinese Soviet issues on my site. Most of the fakes and counterfeits have been identified there. I'd love to correspond if you're ‘into’ this series of rarities.

Hi Moneta,

Firstly, fantastic site! Very interesting.

I am not sure if the fake I have is silver. It is not magnetic and the weight is low (about 12%) but I am not sure how thick these should be.

The Chinese characters  and the wheat stalks on mine are finer, more delicate, than they should be, so I think it is a more recent fake perhaps?

There is a 1 Yuan soviet currently on sale on eBay which although much larger has identical characters and stars as mine on the obverse? (non-globe side).

I paid £1 for mine and it was advertised as “white metal”. Which I thought was a bargain!

I'm not particularly into this series but came across them due to my OFEC collecting. They are certainly intriguing though.

A density test is not so complex.

Thanks for visiting the site, there's more needed info there on the Chinese Soviet coins than anywhere (open the Links, registration there will not bring spam, etc). Yes, it looks like white metal but the real giveaway is the “fabric” of the piece. It's way too perfect in general and the characters are too sharp and clear. The Soviets struck most of this stuff on portable equipment in difficult circumstances. The link posted looks like the other one that was linked, all clear and obvious fakes (not contemporary counterfeits) and have only novelty appeal. One Pound is a great price, you can learn a lot about spotting “fabric” characteristics of authentic pieces. Even VF examples of this piece now sell for a few hundred US dollars. I've collected those since the early ‘80’s, there are never bargains for authentic coins. The restrikes (1960's CCCP official) from the copper series are collectable, with with low prospects of future profit. Some are dark toned and even intentionally beat up to pass as originals, so you have to learn the fabric. They sell for $75 - $125 while the 1930's pieces get x2 - x4 of that price, so you need to be careful. There are fakes of the entire Soviet series, some very difficult to distinguish. The Yuan now sell for between $9k - $30k.

Yes, pretty much as I thought. I have also seen a couple on eBay that look like they were possibly “cast” based on the surface finish/fabric.

Thanks for your input.

All the best
