Places to pick up coins other than online auctions

7 posts
I recently discovered tip jars at cafes. I'd noticed that lots of people throw in foreign coins so I approached the girls and asked if I could have them if I tossed in something they could actually spend. They were quite happy to let me do that so I tossed in a NZ $1 coin and picked out a nice Australian $1 coin, an Australian 2001 50c coin and a USA 2000 South Carolina state quarter.

Any other suggestions on where to get some coins rather than trolling on online auctions?

By the way I did get a Wheat Penny from a water fountain in a mall. I didn't have to dive in, just put my hand in and got it. It was fun  :wiz:

Not sure of anywhere else but in US people throw pennies (mainly) wherever they see still water including open aquariums.

The floor. Lots of people drop pennies and small coins all the time. I've found all sorts of coins on the floor. I pick up whatever I find and usually, living in the UK, I put the 1p, 2p, 5p,10p, 20p, £1 (I missed out 50p and £2 because I have never found them on the floor) in separate pots and wait for them to build up.

Coin lockers...telephones...broken ticket machines....all good places to look. And you'll be surprised blocked drains. I've found a £5 note down a drain once. £20 in Boots: gave it in, got it about 6 weeks later.

I was thinking about writing a separate post about this but: there were some young lads playing football with a penny in London and I thought any minute now they are going to leave it alone. They did and I rescued it and took it home and it is probably still in my penny pot, scratched, scuffed, and ruined but it is my penny now...and I can take that to the bank. Does anyone else turn to the sound of where lots of money has been dropped...eyes darting about looking for the coins? Anyone think about rescuing obliterated coins etc? You know the quirks...in quirkiness of coin collecting? x.  :O  (8

Ha ha you're funny. I am a man that was homeless from 13 until I was 23 and if you tried to mug me I'd have sticked my dog on you then used you to mop the street. Just saying some people are blessed to not have to be beggars and some of us grew up eating leftovers out of dumpsters and asking for spare change. So next time you see a beggar and you have that thought of mugging him I'd think twice 'cause in the end it's a 60% chance you'll end up face down in the gutter.
