Cancellation markings are a possibility, but if they distributed coins in rolls back then, any such coin would go unnoticed.
Also, if this face value could be used in vending machines, then the cancellation would be ineffective. The coin would still go through.
That's why cancellations usually give the coin a wavy shape, like a rippled potatoe chip.
So I suspect it's just someone who squeezed his coin in some sort of vise. Still, I don't rule out entirely the (more Interesting) possibility it's a cancelled coin.
