1992 Lincoln Cent – Lines on Neck (Die Crack or Damage? [solved]

5 posts • viewed 58 times

Hi,
I have a 1992 Lincoln cent and noticed some unusual lines on Lincoln’s neck area.
They look like raised lines rather than scratches, and I’m unsure if this could be:
die cracks
die polishing lines
or just circulation damage
The rest of the coin shows decent detail, and the lines seem consistent under magnification.
Has anyone seen something similar on this year? Any help identifying whether this is a known variety or just a common mint-related feature would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Die clash error; both dies struck together without blank / planchet between them - leaving the imprint of the reverse die on the obverse. The lines you see are from the buildings columns.

edit; you can also see the top of the building sticking out of the nose on the right and the back of the head on the left.

Check reverse and you might see the outline of the obverse.

Good call except the part about the top of the building. It part of the bottom of the building.

Hi raserian1

Thank you for the detailed explanation. The die clash theory makes a lot of sense, especially with the column transfer. I appreciate your help!

You're welcome. King did the lion's share of the work.
