Help Identifying this square thick copper coin?

5 posts • viewed 79 times

Hi all, newbie here; I've had this coin/thing for ever and can't find it in any catalog. Any one know what it is? I think it's a beauty! It came. in a Hugh coin collection I purchased many many years ago. I do not have a scale that weighs such small items, my postal scale filckered at .1oz. This measures about 15mm square and about 2mm thick.

Thanking you in advance!!  John

Welcome to numista! With no value, portrait or year it looks more like a coin weight to me, possibly a weight for a ducat at a bit more than 3 grams.

:)

Thank you Marc16.  I appreciate you response!  I am not knowledgeable enough to know about  “a weight for  a ducat…”. But it sure sounds good. I hope others might join in on providing more info  on this little cute thing.

Again, thanks for your interest, welcoming and info.

Oh right, newbie, silly me! 😅

A ducat is a gold coin weighing around 3,5 grams, such as this one: N#328947

What I meant is that it could have been used to authenticate a ducat by balancing it on a scale with the coin, therefore making sure the coin has not had material removed or is made out of something else than gold.

My guess is german, not very knowledgeable on these though, maybe this should be moved to the exonumia id’s instead @ZacUK ?
