I was about to post into the Feb edition of the thread but realised we’re already well into March. So I have the pleasure of opening with a couple of german pieces I picked up among several other modern and old pieces at a coin show in Missisauga over the weekend
Nice additions. I was tempted to go to that coin show and get the latest Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Coins (and some coins too, most probably), but in the end I ordered it online.
I just received these items:
RIC IV 648 — AE sestertius of Severus Alexander, 231–235. Rev. type: SPES PVBLICA, with Spes standing and holding a flower. I put a small bid on it and won. It looks better in hand though it's not a museum piece.
Constantius II with the very common reverse FEL TEMP REPARATIO. The mintmark seems to be Antioch but I'll have to confirm. I don't think it's a damaged coin; just a coin struck on an irregular planchet. The portrait is nice but the legend on this side is almost entirely missing.
It’s nothing special, but just found the stainless steel variant of a Nicaraguan 1 cordoba at the local grocery store’s coin machine that I was missing in my collection.
Nice finnish coins ngdawa! I really like those because they’re pretty cheap here in sweden, currently i have the 50 penniä and 1 markkaa silver coins, all in fantastic condition.
Today I picked up a few coins at a garage sale, got a really good bargain for them too!
Not coins, but a lauer 1 krona miniature and a catalouge from 1971, the miniature was a bit silly and pretty cheap so I said ”why not” even though I don’t collect them. The catalouge, even at more than 50 years old has some really useful info about oriental coins that might not make me rush to the id forum every time for those kinds of coins!
A voc duit, already got the same type in a swap recently, but with the age difference of about 60 years that didn’t really bother me. Two american silvers, both in alright condition, not too shabby, the half dollar is just for stacking but the wartime nickel is fir the history it comes with! Finally, a 1916 doa 20 heller minted in tabora! My favourite out of the lot, love the interesting story it comes with, basically minted in a garage by some people who didn’t know at all what they were doing 😂
And the price? ~32 euros! just the half dollar covers up for all of the cost! Fantastic finds today, it’s really a gamble going to these types of gatherings.
Or he's been time travelling or got a tremendous jet lag.
Seriously now, nothing new for me, except a 12 cm sized ammonite shell.
Which is fine, more time to “rest the wallet”. Unless the local seller gets something interesting, my next purchases will be at a coin fair near the end of the month, which I'm still not sure if I will go.
A Venezuelan 10 Bolivar note from 2018 (likely very worthless now), and an Indian 2 Rupee note (from I believe 2017). I know, they’re low value notes, but still appreciate them.

Nice 2 rupee, though Im pretty sure that one would be much before 2017. It would have had the rupee symbol. The govt did issue banknotes in Re1 and Rs5 with rupee symbol as one offs for reasons nobody knows because they were long replaced by coins. To your point, 2rupees won’t get you much. Indeed they have even stopped minting Re1 coins in the last couple years
I haven’t lived in the country for the last decade and inflation has taken its toll as in anywhere in the world. Back then, I could see someone buying a small candy, or put a couple of them together and that could cover a basic bus/local train trip.
I still visit my folks annually in Bombay. But Bombay is generally more expensive than the Rest of the country and I don’t exactly penny pinch when Im there lol. But I can Imagine in a more rural area, a sachet of shampoo or a packet of biscuits for instance could be Rs 5-10. So a Rs2 coin could come in handy
Good start guys, haven't bought anything this month to save money and my credit card got caught up in a scam so have to get a new one. Also moving this month. I am pretty much moving into a new phase, where my collection is pretty much at its maximum size and I will unlikely expand it more.
Sad to say, coins are just not as exciting for me anymore. These crazy metal prices have killed it for me, every new coin is just meh! rather than anticipation.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Nice new pieces, I love rainbow toning on any coin. 😎
I havent bought any coins yet in August, but I bought a Dansco binder for my LMU crowns.
Plenty of room for growth, I have eight pages to fill!
Beautiful! Much better than my world crowns and LMU (I have German 5 mark coins and Dutch rixdollars which are slightly larger) sit in a standard clear album with flips.

Seems like it has been a little while since anyone posted here, guess I will be the one to break the silence with a (not so) little antoninus pius sestertius!
Got it for a measly 120 sek (~11 euro) possibly because, not to sound insulting, the sellers photographing skills were not at the highest level (the pictures were pretty good, but it’s hard to show the scale of these coins).
Picked up some north/south american (and a filipino) silvers after the little drop in price, happy to find these as they seem to have trouble making it into Stockholm!
Especially like the patina on the mexican real, probably cleaned sometime but I will never not love a rainbow tone on a coin! :)
Probably the final additions this month for me (if I can resist checking out the coin shop tomorrow):
A few big roman coins coming in from my swap with @SirFabsi ! Four people I didn’t have on coins previosly, plus another sestertius that now makes a trio.
I’m also changing my profile picture to the much nicer Marcus Aurelius sestertius as the AE25 I currently have is in not the best condition.
I would like to extend my gratitude to a respected elder brother who runs a business in the Middle East, through whom I was fortunate enough to acquire this 100 Riyal coin minted in 2024 by the Central Bank of Yemen (Sana'a) under the control of Houthi forces.
Fascinating! Not many collectors have one of those, I expect.
I have some more interesting middle eastern coins to show.
Among the last coins of the Pahlevi era, 1357 (1978).
Among the last silver circulating coins minted in Iran, 1,2, 5, and 10 real issued, 1952 final year.
A silver ¼ rial from a generation earlier.
Some 1950s Egypt .720 silver, and a little 1 millieme
Turning to Latin America, Nicaragua also features the rising sun. Cleaned, but good details.
Colombian 50 cent coins were on the same module as the US half dollar, and indeed the Philadelphia mint struck many half dollars for Colombia, but this one has the B mark of Bogota.

Some “better” coins I got for £1 each from a tin of common muck coins from a market stall in Cambridge.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
Your instinct is correct! Spending your budget is the wrong way to think about coin collecting, This stuff really is better than money - It is not consumed like food, it is preserved like treasure, which it is. And it is going up in future value, which is more than you can say for money in a bank account!
Nice coins too! 😇

Also got two small junk silvers, after a long time there was someone selling silver coins by weight. But the price of the silver gram was the double from few years ago, thank goodness that it's downed from the peak price of a while ago.
1980 20 and 50 cents are from an FM set. The 1975-1983 type 20 cents coin is for some reason very hard to find in uncirculated condition. I checked/asked for photos few times on Numista, but all were AU at best. And I haven't been able to find one even on Taobao, so I decided to get an FM set and break it up. Even in FM sets they (the 1980 50 cents too) usually have large black spots, but luckily I found one set where both coins were fine. I already had the 1977-1980 type 50 cents, but this one I think is slightly better.
The 1976-1979 5 dollar is quite hard to find in uncirculated condition too. From what I know, they were removed from circulation shortly after the last year of minting, and most were melted. MS64 is not a very high grade, but it also wasn't expensive (I paid slightly more than the price of grading), and is definitely uncirculated :))
With these additions I have technically completed all Elizabeth II. and SAR Hong Kong standard circulating coins. However, I still need to swap my 1988 BU set for a proof set. And get the 1993 proof, and 1997 (commemorative) proof sets instead of individual coins. (Plus I also do not differentiate coin types by edge, so I excluded the earlier (security edge) types)
South Korea:
10 won - 1980, 50 won - 1982, 100 won -1982 (old types).
These are also from an FM set. In 1982 a very rare proof set was issued, which I most likely will never be able to get. So I decided to go for standard coins. 10 won unfortunately has a dark spot, but irl it does not really reduce the appeal of the coin. Maybe sometime I'll get a better one.
Portugal: 50 centavos - 1977
British West Africa: 1/10 cent - 1936 - George V.
British India: 1 pice - 1943. This coin overall looks nice, but unfortunately has a very dark patina in multiple places near the edge. (So I am hesitant to call it uncirculated). It's okay for now, but I will be looking for a better piece for replacement.
Nicaragua: 10 cent - 1974 - FAO
Thailand: 1 baht - 1972 - FAO
2. Two coins from February
It seems I forgot to share these two coins that I believe I received in February (or maybe the very beginning of March):
They are too good not to share :)
Bonus: additions to swap list and FM set stamps
These coins are duplicated I got from breaking up the HK and Korean FM sets, and all are going into my swap list.
And finally the stamps:
I do not collect stamps, but I like to put aside those I get with FM sets.
Also got two small junk silvers, after a long time there was someone selling silver coins by weight. But the price of the silver gram was the double from few years ago, thank goodness that it's downed from the peak price of a while ago.
And also got one of that new syrian notes.
Wow, that one from tibet looks more like a carpet than a banknote! 😂
Finally at the end of the month, I bring something to the table and say 2026 has arrived for me. These are all unsold lots from the recent Mowbray auction in NZ. I will pick them up at the Auckland Coin fair on Saturday. But I purchased them today, so that makes them March purchases.
Strange for me to not show purchases for the month until the last day!
This south African 1924 Half penny is apparently darkened MS66 Brown colour and equal highest graded, for $100 and something to have a best quality is a nice buy. I think it will stay in that slab!
Fairly worn Irish Gunmoney group, but 3 coins here, Crown, Halfcrown here and a Shilling, apparently shilling is Sep 1689 and halfcrown is May 1690. I did not have any gunmoney until now. The coins were made out of melted down cannons, bullets and other ordinance to pay troops. After this unsuccessful siege of 1689/91, the coins got revalued at like twopence for a shilling or something.
Nice group of Irish reuls and leit reuls (6d and 3d) mostly early and some in slabs. 16 in all, best shown
A second NZ 1935 threepence, this one is a wide date, lightly cleaned, but a full VF. It goes with my narrow date one.
Interesting group of NZ silver sixpences (Best 6 of 11 coins shown).
These are auction photos, anything juicier I will show you in April's thread.
I will also show anything I buy at the fair in April.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

With the month ending, I thought I'd post some of my acquisitions from this month. I didn't add much over February, but I fixed that to an extent this month, mostly silver actually, through a couple of coin stores. Firstly, I acquired Egyptian silver for the first time:
