Sending from Romania to US

I recently agreed on a 2nd banknote swap with a member in Romania. A few days later he told me that absolutely no mail under any circumstance can be sent from Romania to US since August 2025: “USA customs rejecting all income packages” at his post office.  Can a Romanian tell me if this sounds accurate for the last 6 months? I am receiving letters from many European nations since August 2025, and am looking for more information from others in Romania. I cannot find any information about US rejecting mail from Romania.

I’ve had a similar issue with something I’m supposed to receive from Romania. I purchased an uncut sheet of 4 20 lei notes from a friend and local dealer, and we later found out to our surprise that the Romanian postal service suspended all mail except for documents to the US. He was having issues with his local post office being willing to send the envelope the sheet would be in, so I still have not received it. Here is the link he provided me with: https://www.posta-romana.ro/a1966/stiri/informare-privind-suspendarea-temporara-a-expedierii-trimiterilor-postale-pentru-destinatia-sua.html. We are working on figuring out a way to send the mail to another country and have it be forwarded to the US via a friend.

Best regards,

Daniel

Sweden has banned shippings tonthe US as well dues to the new US custom laws. It's probably a EU thing.

There is a lot of uncertainty about sending things to the US by mail, and it's true that the flow was suspended for a while just after Trump announced the new postal tariff system in mid-August 2025.

But, this has all been solved and now parcels and packages to the US, not ordinary letters containing documents, have to be declared and tariffs paid before the shipment is accepted by the postal service. In most EU-countries this must be done online, it might not be possible to have this done live at the post office.

My experience with Romania is that ordinary letters disappear and registered letters might arrive damaged or soaked. It's a bit of a lottery. It should be possible though to send ordinary letters and parcels to the US, but another question is whether people want to disclose what they are sending in a country where pilfering the mail is common.

My swap partner says not even documents can be sent to the US. This does not sound right to me, but I have no other input from Romania. We are trying to transfer a small number of paper banknotes, and he says he can’t do it.

You may let him send them to me, I will forward them to you.

Thank you! I think I will accept your kind offer Yvon.

It seems there will be no change in the near future, and he is willing to send to you.

Please check your private messages so we can confirm your most recent address I have.

Last week I bought a coin from eBay (first time in years and years), and apparently it was shipped from the US, so I had to pay an additional import fee of 30 € … 😱

FWIW: I have seen many similar complaints about shipping from the USA to other countries on other forums.  I have read that some sellers have cancelled a sale due to the prospects of item being over taxed (hence price inflated much more than item is worth).  This “chatter” was mostly re: banknote packages which would not have the weight of a large coin purchase (package).

On the other hand, I have read American buyers are usually NOT affected (no duties/no extra import taxes at customs) shipping from other countries to the USA. It has been like US customs is not bothering with small/light packages (& flagging them for import duties) at the moment. Perhaps they're bogged down with the larger, heavier & more obvious stuff? I don't know but that wasn't what the famous import tariffs were all about (& it seems flipped from what one would expect).

I’ve swapped with a couple US members and so far there’s only been minor price increases but maybe it’s because I only send untracked standard letters or under 200gish large letters declared as “documents” with no value.

This might be different though for tracked and larger swaps hence I’ve been limited to only banknotes or under 10-20 coin swaps.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
