Mexico 1, 2 & 5 Peso coins composition changes

4 posts • viewed 280 times

Hi

While adding the mintage figures, I noticed within the Mexican Mint programme 2025-2030 PDF (page 21 onwards) that since 2022 they've been exploring the feasibility of switching the aluminium-bronze centre cores on the $1, $2 and 5 peso coins for a bronze-coated steel option to save costs and increase durability of the inner core which gets heavily worn after a couple years of use. This new composition of the centre core commenced first on the 1 Peso towards the end of 2025 with the other two denominations this year.

From the reports, we can see that the 1 Peso coins were minted until November with the old alloy as well as the ones with the bronze-coated steel centre cores which means in 2025.

690,657,086 were minted with the old centre core, whilst 152,975,650 were minted with the new magnetic core.

While I have already made the request I would appreciate if any Mexican members and 2025 $1 owners would like to confirm if the 2025 dated magnetic centre core version is in circulation?

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
