Iran is the only country I know of that used a disposed ruler's old currency & overprinted the portrait of the Shah with an arabesque pattern. There may be others but I am not aware of them.

i know that egypt also did the same but that was on smaller denominations like the 5 & 10 piastres when they overprinted the watermark of king Farouk I
