Diameter and Weight?
It's most likely a restrike as the originals from 1780 are uber rare.
In fact, the coin with a date of 1780 is still made by the Austrian Mint today.
AVST DUX is the easiest way to tell if you have a re-strike 1780. AUST DUX is on the real 1780 and earlier coins, the early re-strikes are however also worth many times more than silver value as they can also be as old as 18??, when the re-strikes were first minted, however the way to determine what year a re-strike was struck is quite complicated due to only die variations on an identical re-strike version.
As you have no doubt already understood, your coin is a re-strike version, but due to the wear on the coin, it is either an early or older re-strike (worth more than recent modern re-strikes) or a fake of an early re-strike. Which is of course your actual question „real or fake“ ?
So here you need to verify weight and diameter and whether it is made of silver or not?
From the images and my expert eye, some things are looking okay for an early re-strike, but the colour is making me sceptical. An image of the Obverse and rim, along with the Reverse, would be more helpful than just the image of the Reverse!
If you are just interested in selling the coin, go to a coin shop, they will be able to evaluate it a lot more than a 3 word (grammatically incorrect sentence) with a single image post on a forum.
If you are interested in the coin and want to learn more, I can happily point you in the right direction so you can learn about this coin, the originals and re-struck coins.
Well the rim looks authentic, and from what I can see the details also, wear seems to be equivalent throughout. Weight and diameter are close enough and it isn’t magnetic.
All you need to do now is find out which version it is, if it is one of the ones that very few examples are known to exist, then start being sceptical again, if it is one of the others that are not so rare, I would say be happy.
I think you have a crown C, on the reverse. On the Obverse, the number of pearls are imported, the feathers and the signature size on the obverse or reverse (can’t remember) are all indicators or different mints. The link provided above by DSC07625 is a good one, click on „The Thalers“ on the left side, there you will find links to mints and images / descriptions. I think also Numistas own page has lots of good information.
I certainly don’t think it is a 1970s + re-strike, by the wear it could easily be an early to mid 1800s one. Have you tried to find which coin it is? Do you have any ideas?
I actually bought it not knowing anything about it. It was part of a collection of South African coins. I really appreciate all your help. Thanks a million
It is one of my favourite coins that I don’t own! Would love to have an original, or an early 1780 strike, I used the word re-strike for the 1780 coins, technically that isnt correct as it is more like a continuation strike, especially in the proceeding years, I think re-strike is better for the 1970s and onwards versions as originally they were continually minting them because of the trust that traders in the Middle East had in the silver content in them and they were very much used. The 1970s onwards are really just for collectors.
I hope it is real, and please let me know if you find an exact match up.
