"Taiwan" as an issuing entity does not exist. Its government is a direct continuation of the ROC, not a separate entity that sprang into existence in 1949. It should be renamed to ROC as that is the actual name of the country, but kept as a separate page (ROC 1949-present) to reflect its reduced sphere of territorial control, and grouped under the China section as it is both internally and externally considered a part of China. Taiwan island is simply a province of the ROC, and only one of several islands under their administration.

The post-1949 entity is commonly known as ‘Taiwan’.

It can be better described as the Republic of China on Taiwan.

I added Republic of China and ROC as searchable variants for Taiwan. However, due to its disputed status, we will leave the list placement as it is.
