Spain 50 Pesetas 1957 (★67) – faint underlying lines; overstrike or die/planchet [solved]

Hello everyone,
I’d like to ask for opinions on a Spain 50 Pesetas dated 1957 with star ★67 (1967 issue).

Weight: 12.46 g

Composition: Cu-Ni

Diameter & thickness: within normal range

Edge lettering: “UNA GRANDE LIBRE” (clear; this variety)

Under raking light and high magnification, I observe faint linear and letter-like traces beneath the design, mainly:

between some obverse legend letters,

around the portrait (ear/neck area), and

near the reverse rim.

These traces appear below the struck devices, not consistent with post-mint scratches.

Does this look more consistent with a possible overstrike, or with die-related marks (die polish / die clash), or planchet rolling / metal flow lines?

Any insights or similar examples for the 1957 ★67 issue would be appreciated.
Thank you!

I see a definite die clash and die cracks. Then lots of post mint damage, unfortunately this coin circulated a lot and got all beat up, because of its wear and tear I don’t think these errors will add much to its value, which will be pretty low.

I have seen lots of these 50s but rarely with mint errors, they are quite common coins around Europe because of their size and because Spain became a popular holiday destination when Franco saw the potential in the 1960s. Holiday makers always brought a few back.

Nice find though.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I agree — the die clash and cracks appear to be genuine, but the heavy circulation and post-mint damage clearly limit any added value. Your point about how common these 50 Pesetas are due to tourism in the Franco era is very helpful. For me this was mainly a good learning example. Appreciate you taking a look.

Yes, die clash.

Hello,
Thank you very much for sharing the images and your analysis — it was truly impressive.
Your structural approach clarified a detail that had been puzzling for quite some time and made everything immediately clear.
This is one of the most insightful explanations I’ve seen on this topic.
I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge.

Best regards,
Moris
