Advice on Justinian I (527-565). Æ Decanummium [solved]

3 posts • viewed 57 times

I bought this coin (23mm, 4g) and I wanted guidance on identifying it (I believe it is Sear 236?) but also on the patina. The coin description included ‘repatinated’ and I wanted to better understand what might have been done to the patina.

Yes, Sear 236 seems fine. If you check the comments on that page, I believe that your coin is the subtype with a dot over the last character in the exergue.

Repatinated means it was painted over with a tan color paint to imitate a genuine sand patina. A lot of unscrupulous sellers do that on eBay to make their coins more appealing.

Many thanks for your advice.
