Non-circulating and bullion coins parading as circulating

Not sure what's going on but there seem to be more and more non-circulating coins in the circulating category.

Another one I recently came across are the Ecus from Gibraltar. (example N#334507)

Who thinks these should be under circulating coins? I certainly don't.

Along with bullion coins this is just plain wrong. Circulating to most surely means coins that everyday people can find in their pockets, doesn't it?

I assume these coins qualify on some sort of  technicality?

Can we at least split circulating into those that truly circulate among the general public, and those that obviously don't?

I had come to rely on Numista's categories for my collecting, but more and more I am unable to.

I collect circulating categories from the 20th century but I am not going to include these and so cannot rely on Numista for accurate lists of what to collect.  This is a real shame as I love this site.

The Gibraltar ECU issue has come up several times before – try searching in the forum.

A couple of the discussions:

I'm on process od receiving Gibraltar ECUs but have not a lot of free time recently. Some of the gold and silver ECU coins are circulation, yes (or at least were intended to circulate when issued). But definitly this is a minority in all Gibraltar ECUs. Will handle this im coming weeks, I hope.

I suppose there is a big difference between coins issued for circulation by “whomever” and actual circulating coins.

Perhaps we need a new category. Coins with which you can buy groceries!! 😆

Either way it's all getting out of hand and there is no way to search for genuine coins that circulate, unfortunately.

Unless anyone has any way of doing that?
